SYDNEY HEADS

Search for Mines [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received December 5, 2.47 a.m.) CANBERRA. December 4. The Minister of the Navy, Mr Hughes; stated in Canberra to-night that as a safety measure, the Naval Board had deemed it necessary to have a check up of the channel at Sydney Heads. This had involved sailings being prohibited. Mr Hughes said that this was a temporary measure, and that normal traffic was now proceeding.

Bass Strait Mines

19 SWEPT UP. CANBERRA, December 4. Nineteen mines have been swept up in Bass Strait since two ships were sunk about three weeks ago. This was announced by the Minister for the Navy (Mr Hughes), who added that minesweeping is continuing.
