SPORTING

Racing Notes Another Juvenile Winner: Panoni, winner c«f the Ruakura Plandicap at Te Rapa last week, gave a clue to her possibilities when she finished second to Cambria at Avondale in September. She is a brown daughter of Vaals and Lucullus—Altercation mare Angry Words, whose previous progeny were of no account, and she is being raced by her breeder, Mr. B. Clarke, of Auckland, for whom she is trained at Te Rapa by J. F. Tutchen. The family as a whole has not been a great success in the Dominion, but Altercation may be remembered by some as a useful mare -round about the Manawatu in the years shortly after the last war. Sale of Settlement:

Settlement has been sold by Mr. N. H. Barlow to Mr. J. Smith, who raced the Nightmarch gelding, Merry March with some success. Settlement, 'who is now six years old, has on the whole been a disappointing horse, though he would run odd races, sufficient to encourage his connections that he might come solid and reliable with age. At the recent Cup Meeting he was running on ninth at the end of the New Zealand Cup, then on the final day he finished fast into third place behind Royal Chief and Little Robin in the Metropolitan Handicap. He is to be given a short rest by his new owner and later on he may be tried as a hurdler.

Grey J.C. Committee: At a meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Committee yesterday, there were present Messrs T. E. Coates (Chairman), H. D. James W. H. Parfitt, A. M. Carroll, and M. J. Fogarty (Secretary). Mr. W. Ward’s application for the ice-cream stall at the Omoto Race Course during the forthcoming meeting was granted. The New Zealand Racing Conference advised that Mr. A. R. Ellis would act as totalisator inspector at the forthcoming meeting. The possibility of using the win and place betting system at the meeting was discussed, being held over until after nominations were received, and possibly a week before the meeting. The Club’s programme for the New Year was approved by the New Zealand Trotting Conference, which stated that Mr. J. S. Shaw would act as Stipendiary Steward at the meeting.

Kindergarten and Cornish: Neither of the handicap winners at Eilerslie over the week-end, Kindergarten or Cornish, is engaged in either the Auckland Cup or the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, the two longer open races at the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting. Kindergarten is in the Railway Handicap on the first day, the w.f.a. Fling’s Plate on the second day, and the Nathans Memorial Handicap, U miles and the w.f.a. Clifford Plate on the fourth day, while he will have the chance to nominate for minor open events on general entry day next Friday week. Cornish’s only important engagements at the meeting are the Summer Cup on the second day and the Nathans Memorial on the fourth day, both over li miles.

Old Bi’l'l’s Mission: Old Bill’s particular mission last season was the Wellington Centennial Cup and he succeeded, despite the fact that he had an exceptional three-year-old in Beau Vite to defeat. The brown horse’s mission this season is the Auckland Cup. Old Bill has already had a couple of races this term, including his second to Lady Tinkle over a mile at Trentham last month, and he was taken to Levin last Saturday for a gallop between events. He will probably have another short race, possibly two, before going north, if not at Feilding then at Woodville, where he has been nominated for the first day’s sprint. As the two steps in his final preparation for the Wellington Cup last January, he ran a creditable third in the Flying Handicap at Feilding and won the Awapuni Handicap, 7 furlongs, at the Manawatu Summer Meeting.’ A real stayer can be fitted for a distance race on such a preparation.

No Holiday Racing: Serenata, winner of the New Zealand Cup will not be raced over the Christmas and New Year holidays. According to her trainer, T. R. George her next start will be in the Wellington Cup on January 16. Duncannon Indisposed:

Duncannon, though still in work, has not been doing at all well lately. He was given a veterinary examination last week, but nothing could be found that would account for his indisposition. There is just the possibility that he was not quite ready for the effort he gave in winning the open sprint at the Wanganui Meeting in September first up after his spell.

Sir Crusoe’s Weights: Sir Crusoe, who was nominated for the second day’s sprint at Levin on Monday, was given 9.7 and was not produced. The Levin handicapper, Mr. H. Coyle, discussing on Monday a recent article on the weighting of this horse, pointed out that it included a mistake in stating that Sir Crusoe and Not Out 'were required after their rehandicapping for the Stewards’ to face each other at the same difference in weight as on the final day at Trentham last month, when Not Out won easily. Sir Crusoe had 41b. less and Not Out 41b. more, which was a difference of 81b. to balance the Trentham form. To get this balance Sir Crusoe had to be lifted 71b. near the top of the weights and Not Out only 41b. near the bottom of the weights. And all the while Sir Beau who was viewed by many good judges as next to unbeatable in the race (he ran second after drawing and racing out wide), could not be penalised at all for his decisive win in the Wellington Guineas.

Trotting Notes S h'O rt Wave’s N ext: It is not often that the Ashhurst trainer, J. A. Gerrard takes a team of horses north without collecting at least some share of the stake-money, and therefore a good deal of interest centres in the respective displays of First Call and Short Wave at the Waikato Meeting on Saturday next. Short Wave is one of the most promising trotters bred in the North Island for some years, and a line to his ability is furnished by the fact that his last five starts have furnished four firsts. Seeing that he now

comes in from 12 yds. at Claudelands it is difficult to forecast his defeat. First Call is an improving maiden who has already been placed on the course, and he should pay expenses on the trip.

May Extend Record: There is not a particularly strong field of stayers. engaged in the slow two-mile Kaipaki Handicap a Claudelands on. Saturday, and it is possible that backers will pm their frith in Crucible, a member of M. Stewart’s stable. This mare has made direct improvement with racing, and her final three appearances last seaon resulted in two firsts and a sec>nd.

Raced Without Luck: Clockwork was responsible for two nleasing performances to finish second each day at Forbury Park, and with an ounce of luck he might easily have won either of the two events. He had to thread his way through big fields, and it was only the result ot splendid finishing runs that he gained some of the money. He should pay to follow in the near future.

Won a Double: King Potts atone for his defeat at Addington by annexing a double at Forbury Park, a feature of his displays being the fact that he won in slow time on the first day and then on Monday scored in 4min. 22sec. This horse has promised to make the tightest classes for some time, and he only requires to make the expected eadway this season to achieve that bject.

Fast Time: Some of the winners on the second day at Forbury Park had to step well inside theii' handicap mark to get first past the post. Certissimus went 3min. 20 l-ssec. from 3min. 40sec., Gleam from 3min. 43sec. to 3min. 23 2-ssec., Happy Man from 3.38 to 3.21 2-5; King Potts from 4min. 30sec. tu 4min. 22sec., Kid Wolf from 3min. 16sec. to Smin. 1 2-ssec., Toceetie from 3min. 31sec. to 3min. 20 3-ssec., Bush Laddie from 3min. 46sec. to Smin. 27 2-ssec., and Peter Smith from 2min. 47sec. to 2min. 42sec. The atmospheric and track conditions v»ere perfect, but it can be seen that it takes a fast horse to win a slow class race. Final Victory: Final Victory, who recently won the MacArthur Stakes at Rosehill, is a New Zealand-bred colt by Phaleron Bay from Hunting Lodge, by Hunting Song from Martianette by Martian from Equitas. His dam is a half-sister to Martian Chief, and her dam in 'turn, Martianette, was a halfsister to the New Zealand Cup winner, Oratress. Final Victory was bred by Mr. S. J. Gibbons, Wanganui, and was purchased for 425 guineas at the Trentham yearling sales last January by Mr. W. Longworth, of Sydney, who was interested in the colt’s breeding, as he had seen Phaleron Bay win in England. Auckland Trotting Cup: ' Stakes for the Auckland Trotting Cup meeting run in value from £2OO up to £1,500 for the principal event. Manian: The Wrack gelding Manian, was considered lucky to get second place in the Air Force Handicap, owing to the mixed gait he displayed during the race. A Returned Voyager: Mr. G. J. Barton arrived back in Dunedin in time for the second day of the Forbury Park meeting. He came from Sydney to Auckland by air in less than eight hours. A Record: Certissimus is credited with putting up a record for a three-year-old when he won the Air Force Handicap. Allowing for ground lost at. the start, he wnnt close to the track record for the distance.

Roydon’s Pride! i Roydon’s Pride, the dam of Certissimus was bred in America and got by Arion Guy (lmin. 59Ssec.) from Belle Keller. Arion Axworthy is a brother to Roydon’s Pride.

Imported Stock: Mr. J. R. McKenzie had two imported horses at Forbury Park in Spangled Maiden and Spencer Volo. They were both slow at striking into gait, and the failure to get going settled any chance they held.

Spencer Volo: Prior to leaving America, Spencer Volo took a matinee record of 2min. 9sec. at the trot, and has only recently been converted to pace. He is a brother to Ceora (2min. 42sec.), Ambrose (2min. 82sec.), and Hatley (2 min. 7sec.). He was got by Spencer (lmin. 59’sec.) from Ellen Volo, by Peter Volo. Gleam: The Rey de Oro gelding, Gleam, is a half-brother to Toorak. Gleam began from a 3min. 43sec. mark and won in 3min. 23 2-ssec. RACING FIXTURES. December 6, 7—Whangarei R.C.
