HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The esteem in which the late Mrs. Margaret Hatch was held in the district, was shown by the large attendance at her funeral this morning. Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church by Rev. Rather J. Finerty, Rev. Fathers T. Browne- (Ahaura) and P. A. Joyce (Ross) being in the Sanctuary. The congregation, which filled the Church, included the children of the Convent Schools. As the remains were borne from the Church the “Dead March in Saul” was played by the organist, Miss Dale. Father Fmerty- recited the prayers at the graveside at Hokitika Cemetery, assisted by Rev. Fathers Browne and Joyce, and Rev. Dr. G. Harrison. The pallbearers were four grandsons of deceased, Messrs B. Knowles (Rimu), T. Barrett (Awatuna), J. Hatch (Runanga), and Private ’E. E. Creagh (Burnham). Amongst the mourners was the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry). In addition to many beautiful floral tributes the bereaved family received many messages of sympathy from all parts of the Dominion.

At the quarterly meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board yesterday, there were present Messrs A. R. Eicock (Chairman), I. J. Preston, J. J. McIntosh, E. H. Box, and F. S. Grant, L. L. Ross (brigade superintendent) and W. E. Gaylor (secretary) . Receipts for period £137 las Bd, expenditure £ll5 4s Id. Tne lease of a reserve by the Borough Council was agreed to, subject to certain clauses being inserted in the deed protecting the Board’s property on the reserve. The Treasury Office wrote acknowledging receipt of new plans of new station, and stating the plan will be placed before the Loans Board at the first meeting of the Board. The Inspector of Fire Brigades wrote respecting home defences, of the volunteer lire brigades.—Referred to Superintendent. The Seeertary of the Loans Board wrote, notifying certain alterations of the plan 3 and specifications. and pointing out same for the Board’s recommendation—Referred to Mr Williamson. for necessary adjustments. The secretary of the Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote asking for the annual grant of £2O to the funds of the brigade, also £5 for Christmas cheer. —Granted.
