HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, September 17. Rimu Flat dredge return this week was 134 ozs. 13 dwts. of gold. At the Borough Council meeting last evening, it was decided to arrange for assistance for the ActingTown Clerk. The Chairman of Reserves and Public Works were authorised to make arrangements for labour for work on Cass Square and other reserves. On the motion of Cr. Fox it was decided to draw the attention of the Railways Department to a' number of broken wires on the overhead bridge. On Saturday, the White Star third grade football team from Westport will play a combined Hokitika team, to be selected from the School and Kiwi teams. On Saturday week, the Cowan Cup seven-a-side tourney will take place at Ruatapu. Entries will be received from all senior clubs. On Thursday last, an ascent of Mt. Reeves (5,881 ft.), was made by two members of the Westland branch oi the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, Messrs B. Andrewes and T. Ward. The climb was made from the Toanha Springs hut. Chamois were seen ascending snow slopes. An attempt was made on Saturday to conquer i Mt. O’Connor (5,957 ft.). The weather was deteriorating, however, and ( with the aneroid showing an altitude of 5,450 ft., and visibility about ten yards, the climbers were forced to turn back.

At Arahura' live stock sale yesterday, beef prices were from 48s to 50s per 100 lbs. Sales by Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. were: —For Mrs. W. F. Harrison was appointed to fill the vacancy on the executive. The secretary reported that he had three cases of books ready for shipment for the men of the N.Z.E.F. Headquarters advised that the membership at the end of July was 23,531, and Hokitika was 31st. with a membership of 159. Mr. J. S. Bain was appointed as representative on the Patriotic Council. The hospital visitors for the month, | Messrs Fraser and Park, reported I that there were six ex-servicemen in 1 the Westland Hospital. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that headstones had been ordered for the late A. W. Dowell and A. J. Willmot. Letters were read from oversea soldiers. The Borough Council met last evening, Cr. A. R. Elcock (Deputy-Mayor) being in the chair, and there being also present Crs. G. Heinz. D. P. Stuart, J. Fox, W. H. Slopforth, C. Caliari, T. W. Duff. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry),.Crs. F. D. Freitas and H. T. Parry. It was decided to call tenders for the painting of the sexton’s residence and slaughterman’s residence, labour only. Accounts amounting to £722 3s 8d were passed for payment. I the same basis as last year. The abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of August amounted to 40 cows, 28 heifers, 47 bullocks, 199 sheep, 20 lambs, 11 pigs, 1 calf; condemned 2 cows. Fees collected for month amounted to £5B 17s 6d, as compared with £77 18s for the corresponding month last year. Mr W. Connor, slaughterman, was granted 12 working days’ annual leave from September. 30. The Westland Automobile Association advised that it did not contemplate further action in regard to the turnouts on the Hokitika bridgeMr R. A. Campbell, consulting engineer, forwarded a report on the pumps, following his personal inspection.—Consideration was deferred. Mr Frank Stewart advised that he was now having timber carted on to his section in Brittan Street, asking. that the road be extended.—Deferred pending payment of rates, Council reserving right to re-value section. H. M. Coulson wrote protesting against the proposal to establish a petrol dump opposite his property in north Gibson Quay. A number of other ratepayers also wrote protesting against any more facilities for storage of inflammable oils in quantity; seeing that the dump provided by the Harbour Board can meet all requirements.—Objections upheld and application refused. A. R. Elcock asked consent to sub-division of section in Brittan Street, on behalf of G. Perry and T- Seebeck.—Approved. E. D. Sherriff asked position with regard to tenants, on reserve leased by him.—Lessee to make own arrangements.
