HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, September 10. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr A. E. Benjamin, J.P., the police charged two young men with being .found drunk and with being unlawfully on the premises of the Mental Hospital last night. A remand was granted until to-mor-row morning, when they will come before the Magistrate. At, the Westland County Chambers last evening, the staff farewelled Mr W. F. Ashley (County Engineer) who goes into camp in the North Island with the next batch for overseas service. Mr James Donovan (County Chairman) presided. Mr Evans, County Clerk, expressed the good wishes of the staff to Mr Ashley, wishing him a happy voyage and a safe return. Messrs E. and C. Stoop, Mitchell, Bernhard, and Woolhouse, Mr Donovan and Cr. Rowley also spoke, conveying good wishes. Mr Donovan presented Mr Ashley with a camp compact and a cheque, praising Mr Ashley for his woik while in the district. Mr Ashley, who has been with the Council since April, 1934, expressed' his appreciation of the good wishes for hjs safe return. Rimu Flat dredge return this week was 183 ozs 2 dwts fob 1301 hours, from 43,224 yards. Gillespie’s Beach dredge return was 51 ozs 19 dwts for 132 hours, from 16,770 yards. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), J. Laing, R. J. Lawrence R. J. Pedder, B. King, Rev. M. Feist, A. Leslie, L. Graham (hon. secretary), W. E. Richards. Mr. James Shannon , wrote stating that his contract, for conveying pupils from Blue Spur, had been terminated. He thanked the committee for courtesy shown him. A circular from the Education Board, respecting what action should be taken m eniergency situations, was read. The Hokitika Centennial Bath Committee wrote asking for a donation towards the funds, stating St. Mary’s had made a donation of £25. —On the motion of Rev. M. Feist, seconded by Mr. B. King, it was resolved that a reply he sent that the committee were in sympathy with the good work of the Bath Committee, but regretted that no funds were available to make a grant. It was pointed out that only recently the sum of be-1 tween 140 and £5O had been raised at school sports for the Centennial baths. The Canterbury Education Board forwarded plans and specifications for the school swimming bath (40 x 20). The committee, after considering the plans, decided to ask Mr. D. Stevenson for plans and an estimate for a bath 50 x 25; and also to apply to the Education Department icr the maximum subsidy towards the cost of the bath. The headmaster (Mr. Batt), reported that the roll number of the primary department had increased by 10 and the secondary had decreased by one.
