BRUNNER NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Miss R. McNeish, returned to Taylorville on Saturday alter a holiday visit to Rangiora. Mrs. Chetwynd, has returned from Wellington and Christchurch, where she visited her sons. Mrs. J. Donaldson, of Wellington, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. Hales, of Stillwater. Winners at the Stillwater weekly euchre tournament were: Mrs. Hales and Mr. Strass. The monthly meeting of the Taylorville School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs T. W. Morgan (Chairman), W. Gutberlet, R. R. Smith, Robert Smith, L. Walton and the Headmaster, Mr. A. E. Mahon. The Headmaster reported that the school had commenced the third term with a roll of 96. Attendances for the week had averaged. 87, but one or two children were not yet back from Christchurch- and colds and sickness accounted for other absentees. The committee decided to purchase the radio set which had been in the school on trial for several weeks. The Secretary was authorised to effect insurances on all school pro-; perty not covered by the Department policy. One account was passed for payment. A hard-up social and dance was held in Wallsend Hall on Saturday evening by the Wallsend Drama Circle. Brunner Brass Band contributed several numbers outside the hall. A mock court was held which caused much merriment, and the lines imposed on the large number oi offenders added considerably to the proceeds (which go towards the Christmas parcels lor the soldiers). A euchre tournament was held on the stage for non-dancers, the winners being: Mrs. J. Jackson and Mr. G Nimmo. Mr. Nimmo handed his prize back, and it was later Dutchauctioned and realised 9s. Miss Watson supplied the music tor dancing, and it was all that could be desired Mr. R. Moth was an efficient M.C. Miss I. McDonald (Greymouth), contributed two items. Novelty dances were won by Mrs. Lester and partner, and by Mrs. J. Donaldson and Mr. H. Doyle, and a lucky seat by Mr. A. Bernard, Jnr. Miss F. Moth and Mr. J. Devlin, Jnr., were the winners for hard-up costumes. Opportunity was taken to make presentations to the leaders of the Drama Circle, Mr. and Mrs. G. Porteous, who are leaving the district in a few days, Mr. Porteous having joined the Air Force; also to another member of the Circle, Mrs. Slater, who has recently left the district to reside in Greymouth. Mr. R. Moth, in calling upon Mr. and Mrs. Porteous to accept the present from the Circle, made reference to the nigh esteem in which they are field in by the members and extended to them every good wish for the future. Mrs. Slater, who was also the recipient ol a gift from the Circle had been, said Mr. Porteous, one of the most enthusiastic members, and had never missed a practice, and in his opinion much of the success of the Circle was due to her, and they were losing a valuable member. ‘‘For They are Jolly Good Fellows” was heartily sung. Mr. Porteous, being overcome with a sudden attack of shyness, Mrs. Porteous briefly thanked the Drama Circle for their lovely present, while Mr. Slater appropriately replied on behalf of his wife. A hardup supper was then served, everyone doing full justice to it. Dancing continued till morning.
