Renewals Adjourned [Our Own Correspondent] Several applications for renewals of publicans’ licenses were further adjourned on the application of the police at the adjourned annual and quarterly meeting of the Westland Licensing Committee, held at Hokitika on Friday. Present were Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., (Chairman), Hon. J. Goodall, Messrs J. ,B. Kent, J. Kyle and F. McGregor. The Inspector of Police (Mr W. E. Packer) was also present. On the application of C. G. McKechnie for renewal of publican’s license for the Empire Hotel, Greymouth, the Inspector of Health stated that repairs required to be carried out had not been commenced. Mr J. W. Hannan, for the applicant, informed the Committee that the licensee understood what was required had been done. —The application was further adjourned. Union Hotel,- Greymouth, G. R. Stribling. The Inspector of Police stated the additional bath had not yet been put in. Mr Hannan, for the applicant, informed the Committee that the owner was prepared to instal the bath.— The application was adjourned so that the Committee could inspect the premises. I Tramway Hotel, Teremakau, D. A. 1 McMeekan. The Inspector of Health reported that work required to be done by the last meeting wa's not completed. After hearing Mr Hannan, the application was granted on the understanding the work would be done. John Morresey applied for renewal of accommodation license for the Wataroa Hotel, Wataroa. The application, which was adjourned from the June meeting was objected to by the police. Mr Hannan appeared for the applicant and Mr M. B. James for the owner. It was alleged by the police that repairs required to be ef-

fected since June had not been commenced, also that the licensee was a paid servant of the owner, who had unsuccessfully endeavoured to obtain a license. Constable George, of Wataroa, said he inspected the premises on April 3 last and found the bathroom in need of repairs, a, passage Was dirty, a sitting room needed re-papering, and the bar parlour. There were boxes and barrels on the verandah. The licensee told him he was not prepared to do anything as he had not a‘ good tenancy. A man named Cadigan proposed to go in as manager for Mrs Burns. Another man named Cooper, said he was also prepared to go in as manager. To Mr James, the constable said extensive repairs were carried ' out more than two years ago. The Chairman said the repairs required were not extensive- and there should have not have been all this trouble. The application would be adjourned to enable'the repairs to be effected. On the application for removal of the license of the Paroa Hotel to new premises, the Inspector of Police stated that the amount of accommodation in the new building did not meet the requirements of the Act. Mr Hannan said the building had been erected in accordance with the plans submitted to the Committee. These plans had been approved by the Committee and the Act did not require a specified number of rooms in pfiemises outside boroughs.—To enable the work to be completed the application was adjourned to September 25 next. The following applications for renewals of licenses adjourned from the June meeting to enable repairs or renovations to be effected, were granted:—Clydesdale Hotel, Ross, F. J. Poole; Albion Hotel, Greymouth, D. R. Dowell; Commercial Hotel, Ross, A. T. Cumming; Cashmere Bay Hotel Te Kinga, J. A. Dowell . The transfer of license for the Otira Gorge Hotel from M.. A. G. Kenny to Leo Cyril Fox was granted; also that for the Royal Hotel, Okarito, from S. F. Richardson to F. E. Black.
