PETROL IN AUSTRALIA
RATIONING SOON. (Received August. 19, 9 p.mJ CANBERRA, August 19. The Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced to-day that petrol rationing would become operative in Australia on October Ist. The new scheme is based on the mileages of vehicles last year. There are seven horsepower classifications under which the ration ranges from 10 to 23 gallons a month for private and business cars which covered 6,000 miles last year. The ration increases to a range of 24 to 60 gallons a month where last year’s mileage was 12,000. Motorists will also be permitted to accumulate ration tickets for seasonal ’ purposes. The scheme is subject to. review in three months. /£
