CLOTHES FROM SCRAPS

Wonderful Work WELLINGTON WOMEN.. WELLINGTON, August 18. In the various patriotic activities in which they are engaged wonderful work is being don e by Wellington women, and the results they qte achieving are only matched by theii enthusiasm and keenness. A striking example of th e scope of this fine work and the extent to which women’s keenness and ability ar e being employed was displayed to Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board. It consisted of a box of girls’ and boys’ clothing clean and most attractive in appearance, that had been made from scraps of material. Four women were responsible for this magnificent effort. One of them, a keen worker in the war of 1914-18, started the movement. Some time ago she took a number of raffle tickets to clothing factories to be sold, and whil s there she noticed scraps of material which she- fell. could be put to good use. Th e proprietors oi th c establishment permitted her to have this waste material and sh c ar ranged also to obtain scrap material from two other factories. Two drapery firms provided lace, and the worker arranged with three other women to cut and sew up the materials and make them into Nothing suitable for refugee children at Home

The box included girls’ singlets, locknit petticoats, celanese slips, dresses, aprons, boys’ pants, girls’ skirts, and boys’ shirts. The point about the articles is that there is a, entire absence of the second-hand appearance or any suggestion of shoddiness or sloppiness. They are clean and fresh, and so cleverly have they been made that the joints that can bo seen look like part of the design. Th e woman who collected the materials for the making of the garments intends continuing with the work and to arrange for anotner batch of women to do more sewing.

Mr Hayden warmly congratulated the women on the resuits of their splendid effort, which, ho said, provided 1 a notable demonstration oi' women’s enthusiasm and ability in the patriotic cause and of the potential value of wast e materials.
