COMPETITIONS
WELLINGTON, August 3. The Centennial Music Festival national compexitions have been concluded at Wellington. The preliminary contests were held in the different centres for string quartets Ana choirs and last evening finals were judged by Mr Anderson Tyrer. Of the two string quartets Mr Tyrer placed Christchurch first anu Auckland second. The Christchurcn quartet comprised Messrs R. Sutton, R. Moon, J. Mercer, and L. Hunter The choir contest resulted: Orpheus Choir (Christchurch), 1, Capeiia Choir (Wellington) 2, Dorian Choir (Auckland) 3.
The composition contest resulted in the first priz e being awarded for rne orchestral overture, the “Drysdale.” and the first prize for choral work to “Prodigal Country,” both by Douglas Gordon Lilburn, of Hunterville, who xS now studying in England. The second prize for the overture went to “Festival,” also by D. G. Lilburn, ana the second prize for choral work was won by “Burning of House of Hades” (a Maori legend), by Clement Roy Spackman, of Dunedin. A special prize was awarded to Robert Adam Horne, of Christchurcn for the tone poem “Ao-tea-roa.” Commenting on the string quartets, Mr Tyrer said that both performances had been interesting. He also stated that the work of the choirs had been very good.
