Man Loses His Life
AUCKLAND, August
Suffocated by heat and smoxe, when a house in which he was boaruing caught fire, on Saturday night. iAybejrt Bailey Smith, aged, 66, oi Newmarket, was found dead in ms bed by firemen. Smith was alone in the house, the occupier, Frederick Norton, his wife and four relatives, who stayed there, having gone out for the evening. The fire was noticed by a passerby shortly before fen o’clock, and, when the fire engines arrived the " front door had •to be forced. The brigadesmen quickly sup pressed the flames, but found tha? Smith, who had gone to sleep, was dead. BOARDINGHOUSE BLAZE. MEN JUMP TO SAFETY. AUCKLAND, August 4 Trapped in the upper story of a boarding house in Carlton Gore Road, Newmarket, early this morning, when a fire cut them off from the fire escape, six young men jumped from windows to the lawn twenty feet below,
