SAVING FOR WAR
British Funds OVER 313 MILLIONS (Received August 4, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, August 3. Last week a total of £9,192,037 was raised in war savings, of which £3,265,562 was from the sale of Savings Certificates, £3,889,475 from the sale of Defence Bonds, and £2,037,000 from an increase in the balance due to depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank and Trustee Savings Banks. Since the opening of the campaign, £181,333,266 has been raised by the sale of Savings Certificates, and £135,418,455 by the sale of Defence Bonds. During the same period, the balance due to depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank and Trustee Savings Banks has increased by £46,835.314, giving a grand total of £313,587,035. British colonies in all parts of the world continue to send gifts to His Majesty’s Government to assist in the prosecution of the war. The Governor of the Gold Coast transmitted to the Colonial Secretary £7,133, being donations to the Gold Coast fund for war charities. The Minister of Aircraft Production has sent a message of thanks to Grenada, Northern Rhodesia, and British Guiana for gifts to assist aircraft production. The people of Trinidad subscribed a further £lO,OOO for the purchase of an aeroplane, bringing the total to £52,000. The Gold Coast Spitfire Fund has now been brought up to £25,000 bv a further remittance of £5,000. ' The London Lord Mayor’s Red Cross-St. John Fund totals £2,502,000.
