GOLD BLOC POLICY.

The Senate Banking Committee reported favourably on the 500 million dollars Export and Import Bank Bill, adding a provision prohibiting the use of funds in violation of the Johnson -Act. SAN FRANCISCO, August 1. The National and Foreign Trade Convention unconditionally endorsee Mr Roosevelt’s reciprocal trade programme and national defence policies and recommended the repeal of the ' Johnson Act, prohibiting loans to war loan defaulters. It reaffirmed confidence in the gold standard, and advocated a return to gold as a requisite for world trade- It urged tire modification or repeal of the Neutrality Act provisions unnecessarily restraining American trade, shipping, and finance, and endorsed the actions of. the Havana Conference. PANAMA ZONE. ..WASHINGTON, August 1. Mr Stimson announced that 81 loreign agents have been detained m th e Canal Zone, for illegal entry, and are held for deportation. He added that no aliens besides Panamanians were employed by“ i-ie Armv or the Canal Zone. All aliens formerly employed had been discharged. NEW YORK GOVERNOR FORMS STATE DEFENCE COUNCIL.
