TRIBUNAL’S SITTING

WELLINGTON. Ausust 1

The newly-appointed Aliens Tribunal, of which Mr Justice Callan is president, will begin its business in Wellington next week. Tha other two members are Colonel C. H. Weston. K.C.. of Wellington, and Mr JH. Collins, of Wellington, and Justice Callan will leave Auckland on Sunday night to join 'them. The duty of the tribunal, which has been set up under th e Aliens Control' Emergency Regulations, is to inquire into the bona fides of all enemy aliens, an ■ to advise the Minister for Justice as to which of them should be interned, and what conditions should b e imposed. There are known to be' upwards of 1,500 enemy aliens, in the Dominion. and it is anticipated that the work of the tribunal, which will sit in various centres, will occupy some months. REPATRIATION PROBLEMS. WELLINGTON, August 1The difficulty faced by the authorities regarding the repatriation or •aliens was referred to by counsel' m Court, when a Greek, described as a ship’s steward, appeared on remand, charged with ship desertion and unlawfully landing in the' Dominion. Counsel said that it was practically impossible to get him back to Greece, and it was not desirable that he should be held in prison for any considerable time. The Magistrate said that accused had written to him, asking if he couia join the Forces, and counsel agreea that accused was anxious to serve. A remand for a further week was agreed to. BRITISH INTERNEES. RUGBY, July 31. The Home Office has issued a White Paper dealing with the categories 01 German and Austrian civilian internees who are eligible for release 1 from internment. The regulations app.y only to those who were registered m Category C by the Aliens Tribunals before whom they appeared in the early part of the war. The chief categories embrace young people whose ages are under 18, who are at school, old people, the infirm, doctors of medicine, those whose skill can be used in the war effort, rind 'lnternees accepted for enlistment in Auxiliary Pioneer Corps.
