PROGRESSIVE BOROUGH

[To The Editor] Sir, Being a resident of Holland ✓Settlement at GrSymouth, I wish to draw your attention to the disgraceful state of the roads and footpaths with which the residents of the set dement have to put up. The roa 1 is literally studded with holes that no one could class as “potholes,” but which I consider could better be likened to ditches—or perhaps, the Borough is reserving these for airraid shelters. The footpaths are also full of holes and are covered with spoil and in wet weather both the road and footpaths are literally swamps which no self-respecting resident should be asked to wade through. Perhaps the worst aspect of the whole place is to see a woman endeavouring to wheel a pram through the wilderness. It is too difficult to explain the various “contortionist ic” postures which she has to assume to do this, but perhaps if one of our Borough Councillors was to attempt the same thing we might then get things done. The town of Greymouth is recognised as a go-ahead place, but if the present state of affairs in a new settlement (one the town should he proud of) is any indication, then I should say that instead of progressing, we are definitely slipping. I am, etc.,

“FED UP.
