[Per Press Association] WHANGAREI, July 31.
Admitted to the Kawakawa Hospital last evening, suffering from gunshot wounds in the head, Manga Pera, 55, single, a Maori labourer, living at the Kaihoke Native Settlement, is in a serious but not a critical state to-day. It is alleged that, on seeing his two nieces, 18 and 21 talking to two youths, he chased them home and thrashed them. On the girls going outside and waving to the youths, Pera, it is alleged, fired two shots at them, but missed. Then, it is alleged, he returned to the house, and attempted to commit suicide by shooting. WELLINGTON. July 31. Victor Christian, 21, a presser, a native of Pitcairn Island, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence to-day, on a charge of theft of £BB 19s 6id from the dwelling of James Gavin, Abel Smith Street. The money was taken by forcing open a desk, and all except sixpence was recovered.
