CHANGE TO CHEESE

WAIKATO APPEAL CAMBRIDGE, July 30. A strong appeal was made by the chairman, Mr W. Harbutt, at a meeting of Cambridge Co-operative Dairy Company, for suppliers to produce as much cheese as possible to assist in the effort to send an additional 15,000 tons of cheese to England tfiis season. He stated that an additional vat had been installed at each of the company’s six cheese factories, which would increase the output by 450 tons. If the supply could be kept up to flush throughout the whole season, an additional 214 tons would be available. I

It would be necessary for some farmers to make the change from butter supply to cheese, added Mr Harbutt. For some this would be costly and it was hoped that the Government would make a grant to meet part of the expense. Mr G. A. Walsh considered that it would be very difficult to reach the amount required. He felt that the Dairy Board should investigate the position, and if the full amount did not seem possible it should be announced.

Mr F. H. Anderson said if every possible farmer turned to cheese, even after haymaking was finished, the Cambridge Company would make 1000 tons extra. Mr Harbutt announced that cheesemaking would commence on August 10.
