NURSES’ MEMORIAL

SUCCESSFUL CARD EVENING. The spacious sitting room of the Greymouth Nurses’ Home was last evening the scene of a very enjoyable and successful bridge and Mah Jongevening, resulting in a sum of £5 being realised for the Nurses’ Memorial f und. This Fund was inaugurated after the Great War of 1914-18, and it has undergone a revival with the advent of the Second Great War. It is anticipated that efforts will be made throughout New Zealand to gain further support for the worthy object, which is to commemorate New Zealand nurses killed or incapacitated on active service during the war. For some years the memorial has taken the form of assistance for New Zealand nurses who through sickness or accident have been unable to continue with their profession.

There were ten bridge and Mah Jong tables occupied, and a buffet supper was provided, the nursing staff of the Grey Hospital exerting themselves very effectively in making the function a pleasant one. The prize winners were the tables of Mrs J. F. C. Moore and Miss E. Heaphy. Musical items were given by Miss Frost.

Among those present were: Mesdames J'. F. C. Moore (black velvet', Truman (black silk and floral coatee), D. Taylor (black with gold thread), Williams (blue lace), Rattray (black lace), A. Smith (floral georgette), Shallcrass (black satin and fur cape), Wallace (figured velvet), McGlashan (port wine frock and black cape), McNulty (blackfrock and white fur cape), N. Page (floral georgette), Bush (maroon frock), Misses Julius (gold lame), and E. Heaphy (black georgette and tinselled sleeves),
