WELLINGTON, July 31
Recent fires in boarding houses in Wellington were discussed in the Legislative Council « to-day, when Hon. B. C. Robbins (Auckland) moved that the Government’s attention should be called to a need for legislation requiring the adequate provision of fire escapes. • Hon. T. Brindle (Wellington), seconded the motion, and said that some places in ’Wellington were almost death’ traps, and that powers were required to remedy the matter. Other speakers supported the motion, which was passed. The Pensions Amendment and Pensions Extension Bills were read the first time. The Roman Catholic Bishop ol Dunedin Empowering Bill the Otaki and Porirua Empowering Amendment Bill and the Papawai and Kaikokiriuiri’ Trusts Board Empowering Bill were read the first time.
