Brunner Jubilee

To conclude the golden jubilee celebrations of the Brunner Salvation Army Corps, a concert was held in the Hall on Monday evening, and special meetings were held on Saturday and Sunday evenings. An illustrated review of India was given on Saturday evening by Dr. O. B. Cook, whose talk proved very interesting. The chairman was Dr. E. H. Densem, supported by Rev. F. H. Robertson. A duet was contributed by Dr. and Mrs H. Densem. Captain J. Murray took the chair on Monday evening until the arrival of the Mayor (Mr J. Smeaton) who had been detained at another meeting until 9 p.m. Before the concert Captain Murray said she would like to extend a cordial welcome to Brunner to Adjutant Millar, who had only recently arrived from Nelson to take charge in Greymouth. Adjutant Millar thanked everyone for the hearty welcome he had received, and said it gave him great pleasure to be present at the golden jubilee celebrations and the Greymouth Corps sent their best wishes to Brunner and hoped their good work would continue. The programme presented was as follows:—National Anthem; Scripture reading, Captain J. Murray; March by Band, “Blithe and Gay”; Song, Miss J. Roberts; Cornet solo, Mr W. Tones; Violin solo, Miss R. McNeish; Song, Miss M. Coates; Band selections, “Royal Windsor”; Mandoline solo, Master Royce Kerr; Duet, Miss J'. Roberts and Lieutenant J. Barsby; Cornet solo, Mr W. Tones; Band selection, “Summer Day”; Song, Miss Coates; Violin solo, Miss R. McNeish; Hymns, “Fierce Raged the Tempest,” “Como”; Band; Song, Miss Roberts; March, “Old Comrades,” Band; Misses Watson anct Marshall were the accompanists. At the conclusion of the concert the Mayor said it gave him great pleasure to be present, and on behalf of the Brunner officers he thanked the Brunner Brass Band and assisting artists and all who had assisted in making the celebrations such a success. He extended his best wishes to the Army for the future. Captain Murray also returned thanks and said she would like to thank Mrs W. Dando for making and decorating the beautiful two-tier jubilee cake, which met with a ready sale at 3d per slice, also the popular pie and peas made by Mrs Lee and sold at 3d per plate. Supper was served to the artists and Band by the ladies of the Home League. The toffee competition brought nine entries the winner being Lieutenant Barsby.
