EGG SITUATION

“CHILLEDi" FOR EXPORT. CHRISTCHURCH, July 30. The fresh egg market in Christchurch is described as “somewhat irregular.” Some retailers in the city had eggs marked 2s for firsts and Is lOd for seconds, whilst other shops were selling at higher rates than these. Substantial quantities of eggs were in some retailers’ hands, and 2s and Is lOd was their price retail to the public. This time last year fresh eggs were considerably higher than they are now and the cheaper rates now ruling are considered to be due to the mild weather. According to reports', an endeavour will be made this coming season by egg producers to ship to England 500,000 dozen chilled eggs. The success of this venture will depend on cool storage space on steamers loading for England. Facilities to carry, eggs are not possessed by all steamers leaving for overseas. Last year;

the imports of eggs into the United 1 Kingdom amounted to 247,300,000 dozen, and 75 per cent, of this quantity came from the Continent, mostly from countries now in German occupation. It is very clear that there

must be exceedingly good market for eggs in England towards the end of the present year, but against this is the almost certain possibility that the British Government will exercise some sort of price control.
