TRAIL OF CRIMES
BY CAMP DESERTER. DUNEDIN, July 26. Breaking camp at Ngaruawahia on Mav 16, James Albert Kean, a member of the Seventh Anti-Tank Co/ps of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, converted a motorcycle, and commenced a career of crime that came to a full stop this morning, when he.appeared in Court, and admitted six charges of the theft of goods and money, to the total va'ue of £23 2s 4d, committing mischief, and the conversion of a cycle.
The police said that Kean made the first stop at Hawera, where he st'.T? some clothing, and later worked his way down through the South Island to Dunedin. Here, he occupied a room in an hotel with another man, who was the worse for liquor, and stole £7 10s from him. This money, the cycle, and practically all the articles involved, have been recovere 1. Kean, who had been posted as a deserter, was ordered to be held in custody till to-morrow, when the military authorities will take charge of him. The charges against him were adjourned sine die.
