CLUTHA M.P.
COMPLAINS OF LIQUOR.
ON TROOP AND SPORTS TRAINS WELLINGTON, July 26.
A complaint sfbout the amount of drinking of intoxicating liquor which, he said, took place on railway trains, and particularly, but not solely, on excursion trains, was made by Mr J. A. Roy (Opposition, Clutha). when the estimates of expenditure of the working railways account were under consideration in the House of Representatives to-day.
“On certain trains drinking is a very serious matter,” said Mr Roy. “I don’t say that it takes place on all trains; but it does particularly on trains going to football matches, ana on some of our troop trains. People are put to inconvenience through a. very undesirable element which seems to think that the train is just the place they can bring swags of liquor on to, and make a nuisance of themselves to everybody else. There have been some regrettable instances of this. One finds that conveniences are being used by these people, and it is not fair to women and children who are travelling.” Mr C. L. Carr (Government, Timaru): It is illegal to-day, is it not? Mr Roy: A lot of things that are illegal are done. The Minister for Railways (Mr Sullivan) assured Mr Roy that the complaints would be investigated.
