CANCER FUNDS

In Strong Position

CHRISTCHURCH July 17. Funds of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society total nearly £90,000. Figures given by Sir Hugh Acland, chairman of the Canterbury, arborough, Nelson and Westland div sion, at the annual meeting of the division in the city yesterday set out these moneys as follows. Auckland division £3,030; Wellington, Taranaki, /Hawke’s Bay, £13.000; Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Wes.land, £21,000; Otago and Southla"d--£29,000; central committee, £B,OOU, King’s Jubilee Fund, £15,360. The accounts of the local division showed that the accumulated fund of the division had increased this yeai ( to £21,053 17s lid, through the addition of £667 16s lid from a bequest. On the year’s working there was al debit balance of only £1 4s 3d. Sir Hugh Acland, in his report, referred particularly to the enlistment of research workers for war work, at the same time giving an assurance that research would be maintained. He said that the study leave programme of Mr. J. A. Strong had been interfered with by the war. Nevertheless he had been able to gam valuable experience in the. radionhvsical treatment of cancer in England. He had planned to return by America, where he would have had opportunities for further study before reaching New Zealand, at the end of June. However, in .May he cabled, saying that his services were requir; ed in England for war work. Consequently, the central committee granted him indefinite leave without nay during the war period. During Mr. Strong’s absence, Mr. Roth the assistant physicist, had carried on the work of the laboratory efficiently and had proved himself very competent in carrying out calibration tests at the hospitals throughout the Dominion. The radio r.lvsical sub-committee w?s satisfied that the work of the laboratory would be well maintained during Mr. Strong’s absence. Sir Hugh said that Dr. A. M. .Begg, who was in research laboratories in London, had been expected to return to New Zealand at the end O’, the year, but he, too, had entered war service.

TRAVIS TRUST. When votes of thanks were passed special reference was made to the generosity and public spirit of ihe trustees of Mr. W. H. Travis, who had liberally assisted the society. Mr J. W.
