KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!. The monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. A. B. Spiers) when the following were present: Crs. Murphy, Lawrence, Little, McLean. Apologies were received for the absence of Crs. Passmore and Pamment. Cr. Wise wrote, resigning his position as chairman of the Public Works Committee. The resignation was accented with regret, and Cr. Murphy was elected chairman. Permission was granted to the Rugby Football Club to use the Recreation Ground on Saturdays, during the football season; also, that the club be allowed to make an admission charge of 1/- for men and 6d. for women.

The Acting-Prime Minister wrote, thanking the Mayor and Council for expressions of sympathy in the- death of the Prime Minister.

The Secretary of the Department of Labour wrote regarding No. 13 scheme workers, stating approval had been granted for an extension beyona March 31 of aM existing works not completed by that date, and that an application should be submitted showing the present works in hand, and the approximate time it wouia take for completion of same. The Secretary of the Patriotic Committee wrote, asking for payment of £l6/13/4, final payment of local bodies’ contribution to the Westlanci Centennial Council, and £5, to complete local bodies’ assessed contribution to the Patriotic Fund.—Resolved that same be paid.

It was resolved that the amount due to Mr. Mitchell of 1/- per day for acting as ganger in charge of three or more men, as from December 1, 1938, be passed for payment. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote regarding Dillmans Domain Board, stating that the Board did not appear to function as an activebody on account of the lack of local interest, and asking if the Council considered the domain of Sufficient

valuers a recreation area to the residents of Kumara and Dillma|i, to warrant the continuance of control by a properly constituted Domain Board, or should it for preference be under the control of the Council as the controlling body, stating that the latter practice had been followed with success in other centres. It was resolved that the- Town Clerk reply, suggesting that the secretary be written to, asking him to call a meeting of those interested in order to ascertain if the domain was considered of sufficient importance to warrant a board functioning. The Secretary of the Westland Hospital Board wrote regarding the doctor’s residence in Kumara, stating that the Board considered the property unfit for the occupation of a resident medical practitioner, and beyond economical repair; also that the Board would not take further steps regarding the sale of same without first conferring with the Council.

The Mayor said he had been in touch with the District Engineer, regarding the completion of repairs to the Taramakau bridge, and had received an assurance that the wprk would be expedited in every posstbie way.

Reports were received from the chairman of the various committees on work carried out during the month. Accounts to the amount ot £123/17/10 were passed for payment.
