FRENCH ATTACK Shock Troops [Aust. & N.Z Cable Assn.J , PARIS, March 19. A night communique states: The day was calm ort' the whole front. German reconnaissance parties fell into one of our ambushes, and suffered fairly serious losses west of the Saar. BERLIN, March 19. Both the German communique and the Official News Agency refer to the appearance of French shock troops on the Western Front. The communique reports patrol and artillery activity between the Moselle River and Palatinate Forest. We repulsed two enemy shock troop actions. The News Agency states that German troops sighted enemy shock troop units during lively scouting activity in no man’s land. SWISS FRONTIER. LONDON, March 19. Swiss anti-aircraft batteries went into action, and .fighting aeroplanes went up to' drive off aeroplanes which twice infringed Swiss neutrality yesterday. The machines made off over the border. BELGIUM’S STEEL BARRIER. BRUSSELS, March 19. It is stated that a barrier of steeT Tias been constructed around Belgium, as part of the country’s defences against possible tank attacks. Considerable effort has been made since September to make the country secure. Neither rain no< snow has stopped the work. Soldiers who have been recalled to the colours are continuing to build up this formidable barrier across fields and through the woods. un
