BRITISH M.P.

VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON, March 20. In the course of an informal talk to the directors of the Exhibition and others present, when he paid a visit there, Mr Grenfell, a visiting British Labour M.P., spoke of the state of affairs in Europe, and of what it was that Britain and France were lighting for. They were the only countries in Europe able to stand up against the conflict that tyranny was forcing. “We are standing up to it now in the way that makes me proud,” be said. “I am perfectly sure that Britain is as right as she has ever been, and that the. working class which has always been ready to resist tyranny, is as right as ever, and is ever ready to resist the tyranny that threatens us.” The Allies were fighting to clear the ground for the future. The war was a war for liberty—liberty for German peoples as well as others. He had visited Germany and learnt the German language, and ■ knew thousands of Germans who wanted liberty.

All peace-loving people must have a say in the making of peace, said Mr Grenfell, because it was not a small job to put the world right. An attempt had been made after the last war to do that, but it failed. There was no reason why it should not succeed in future, and it would succeed if the people who wanted freedom could secure the right to it by breaking down the German idea. We would win, and the time would come when the people of Germany would realise that no man was infallible, and that aggression was wrong. “Then we will work with all the people of the world, and men will employ their understanding to the building of a system of security and safety for mankind.”
