HOKITIKA NOTES

[From Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, Marell 14. The death occurred to-day of Mrs. Eliza Jane Nightingale, a well-known and highly esteemed Hokitika resident, after an illness lasting some time. A native of Greymouth, and 69 years of age, she had been a resident of Hokitika for forty years, and was predeceased several years ago by her husband, the late Charles J. Nightingale, of the proprietary of the Hokitika “Guardian and Times' Company. She leaves a family of seven, the daughters being Mesdam.es J. Shannon (.Greymouth), A. Duncroft (Christchurch), and G. Buchanan (Ross), and the sons, Charles (Hokitika). Robert (Christchurch), Morris and Frederick (Wellington). She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Button (Christchurch), and by three sisters, Mesdames A. Brown (Greymouth), and McKenzie (Westport), and Miss Charlotte Bufton (Christchurch), also two brothers, Messrs George Bufton (Staveley), and Robert Bufton ’Christchurch). The relatives will have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon, leaving the late residence of deceased, Brittan Street, at 2.30 p.m. for AH Saints’ Church.

Land situated just south of the Taramakau River sought for mining purposes by two separate applicants who applied for ordinary prospecting licenses over them, was the subject of argument in the Warden’s Court, yesterday before the Warden, Mr. G G. Chisholm. The applicants were Christian Cook and John Acker, join applicants (Mr. Elcock), and Duncan] Angus McVicar (Mr. F. Kitching ham) and the areas under dispute | were two sections of 97!■ and 69 acres, Block VII., in the Waimea Survey District. For Cook and Acker it was claimed that they were, in point of time, the prior applicants, and for McVicar that he was the priQt applicant in point of law. After ing lengthy legal argument, the Marden reserved his decision until the next Court sitting. Mr. E. Heron, of Sydney, a former well known resident here is on a visit] to Hokitika. A resident of Ross, on a charge of drunkenness, in Sewell Street, yesterday morning, was convicted and flnod 10/- at the Court here to-day. Local members of the Second Echelon now on leave will be farewelled next Wednesday at a dance arranged by the Patriotic Association. McCullough or Poerua Road with the State highway and to the westward by the Tasman Sea. The Council dealt with correspondence as follows: From Minister of Public Works, replying that request for huts at Bruce Bay for private touring parties would be looked into. Nolan, Okuru, reporting flood damage to Turnbull Road, and asking authority to restore.—Granted. From Health Inspector, notifying 28 visits and three requisitions. From Kanieri Electric Ltd., asking permission to erect a transmission line, crossing Hau Hau and Tucker Flat Roads.— Granted, subject to there being no m-, terference with County Roads. From T. Kelly, Hari Hari, asking drainage to used gravel pit be attended to. Engineer to report. The Council expressed appreciation of the action of the management of the Arahura dredge in building a cage- and cableway across the river and having it in operation within 32 hours of the washing away of Malfroy s bridge, and a letter is to be written to Mr. D. Pettigrew, dredgemaster, expressing appreciation. Accounts amounting to £3 762/18/5 were passed for pavir/nt. A proposal to close a road reserve in the La Fontaine district, Han Ha j was opposed. The fencing of a road •at Hari Hari by a settler was objected to. the Council affirming that no consent had been given for such action.
