Hicks, General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of 'Building Trade Workers, explained ithe reason for the participation of the (trade unions in the national war effort. He said: “Right at the outlet we understood, perfectly well, that 'no Government of this country, whatever its political complex’on, could conduct a major war without the ■support of the trade unions.”
