PETROL RATIONING
APPEAL FOR LESS WASTE. CHRISTCHURCH, February 13. Co-operation by commercial users ■of petrol to curtail their consumption is being proposed to business organisations in the city by the district oil fuel advisory committee. It. is emphasised that the granting of supplies in excess of the maximum ration’ is a temporary measure for February only, and firms are advised to seek mutual arrangements to continue their work with smaller allowances. . The Coal Merchants' Association, the Milk Vendors’ Association, and the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association are bodies which have been approached. The milk vendors decided yesterday to i hold a meeting to consider their 'position. This meeting will be attended by a member of the advisory committee. The committee has taken the initiative because it was feared that otherwise business houses and others
would find themselves seriously, embarrassed when temporary concessions. are withdrawn, after the end of this month. Some firms are known to have, made mutual arrangements by which one will advise another when a trip is being made by car, so that two travellers going in the same direction may halve their petrol consumption., It is particularly emphasised, however, that the economies to be effected in this way are very limited. In the meantime, additional supplies are being made available tc commercial travellers. 'ln addition to the regulation allowance of 30 gallons they are being allowed threequarters of- the difference ' between 30 gallons and the amount- allowed to them last October and November. Thus a traveller who was allowed 90 gallons a month last year will receive three-quarters, of 60 gallons in addition to his 30 gallons ration, making a total of 75 gallons. DUNEDIN SAVING. DUNEDIN, February 13. It was stated in the Dunedin Citv Council, that to conserve petrol, the amount used on corporation buses had been cut by 40 per cent.
