TRAWLER “WAITOHI”

Sinks Near Westport CREW’S DINGHY SWAMPED. WESTPORT, February 13. The fishing trawler, “Waitohi,” owned by Scandrett Brothers, of Greymouth, sunk to-day off the mouth of the Orowaiti River. The sinking occurred after- the vessel had sprung a leak when leaving for Port Chalmers. An endeavour was made to return the Waitohi to this port, but without success. The crew of > three —Alan Scandrett, William Hart, and T. Sheehan —abandoned the ship, when the engine was flooded, and then attempted to reach the shore in a dinghy. The small boat, however, capsized in heavy surf. Scandrett had to assist Sheehan to the shore. Hart, clinging to the dinghy, came in safely.
