SWIMMING CARNIVAL

CLULEE’S SUCCESS The Greymouth Swimming Club’s first carnival of the season was favoured with glorious weather last evening, where there was a large attendance at the Municipal. Baths. Although the entries were generally, small, keen swimming was witnessed, and the public was treated to an excellent evening’s entertainment. The events were run off in good time, with a minimum of delay, reflecting great credit on the officials responsible. Those in charge of the programme were as follows: — Referee: Mr H. Rattray; Judges: Messrs E. McDonnell, F. W. Baillie and A. D. Milne (swimming); Messrs E. McDonnell, G. Mitchell and G. Walters (diving); Timekeepers; Messrs D. Hanrahan, W. C. McClymont and T. Heiniger; Starter; Mr W. H. Gieseking; Check Starter: Mr F. Costello; Starter’s Steward: Mr J. J. Byrne; Judges' Steward: Mr W. A. G. Washbourne; Costume Steward: Mr N. McKnight; Megaphone Steward: Mr N. W. Jones; Rope Stewards: Messrs W. McLean and J. Wollett; Call Stewards: Mrs W. Beale (ladies). Messrs R. Bunt and B. Watkins; Hon. Sec.: Mr S. C. Millar. The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) attended the carnival, accompanied by Mr Jamesc O’Brien M.P., Mrs O’Brien, Mr and Mrs R Smith, Mr J. Wood (Under-Secretary for Public Works) and his private Secretary (Mr J. Nissen). A feature of the carnival was the success of the former Otago representative swimmer, J. Clulee, who dead heated in the 100 yards’ handicap, won the 220 yards handicap by a big margin, and made the fastest time, 26 1-5 sec in his heat of the 50 yards’ handicap< Clulee was also responsible largely for the success of the Marist Club team in the inter-club relay. His easy style greatly impressed, and the West Coast; championships on Tuesday next should be enlivened by his appearance with the Greymouth side. Results were.:— Learners’ Width: M. Hale 1; M. The only competitor to finish. Boys’ Dive: L. Silcock 1; E. Stew art 2; R. Lovell 3. 100yds Men’s Handicap:. J. Clulee scr and C. Conza 14sec, dead heat 1; G. Wright 14sec 3. In a fine finish, Clulee was just able to reach Conza who swam consistently throughout. Clulee’s time was 60 4-ssec, and Conza’s lmin 14 4-ssec.
