HOKITIKA NOTES

lOur Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, January 16. The m.v. Hokitika sailed at 2.30 this afternoon with a cargo of timber for Wellington. She is due to leave on return via Greymouth on Saturday. In the Methodist Hall, on Saturday evening, a farewell was tended Adjutant and Mrs. Rawcliffe, who have been in charge of the Salvation Army in Hokitika. There was a large and representative attendance.

The death was recorded at Wellington last week at a private hospital, of Mr. Thornhill Cooper, formerly an inspector of the Public Works Department, and a resident of Hokitika for some years. The deceased, who was a Lieutenant of the N.Z. Tunnelling Corps in last war. was a popular member of the Hokitika Bowling Club during his sta/ here, was a member of the Pacific Lodge, and a member of the executive of the Hokitika Returned Soldiers’ Association. He leaves a widow, one son, and two daughters to mourn their loss.

The; Hon. R. Semple Minister ol Public Works, who arrived at Greymouth this afternoon, will to-morrow begin a tour of South Westland. The most important matter of urgency tc engage his attention will be the flooding of the Harihari district, and a decision as to the remedial measures necessary. In the afternoon the Ministerial party will proceed to Weheka, where at 7 p.m. the Westland County Council will entertain the Hon. Minister at dinner. On Thursday, Mr. Semple will proceed to Paringa along the new south road, inspecting the works in hand, and return to Weheka in the evening. On Friday an aerial trip will be made to Haast, Okuru, and Jackson Bay, returning to Waiho, where the weekend wil] be spent. The Minister s visit south is looked forward to with great interest by the settlers and workmen. Mr. and Mrs. Lovell (Dunedin), Mr. and Mrs. W. Lakin (Kumarai, Mrs. Turner (Auckland), Mrs. Fane (Wellington), Mrs. McGuigan and Mrs. O’Driscoll, are visiting Hokitika to attend the golden wedding celebrations of Mr. and Mrs. J. G Lakin.

The congratulations and good wishes of the people of. the district will be extended to Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Lakin, of Brittan Street who today celebrate their golden’ wedding. Married at St. Canice’s Church, Westport, on January 16, 1890, after residing at Denniston for a number of years, they came back to Hokfitika and have resided here ever since, proving valued citizens over the lengthy period. Many friends will extend to the couple the best of good wishes and many years of good health on their happy anniversary.

The friends of Arthur James Willmot will regret to hear of his death which took place at Westland Hospital, where he had been an inmate for some time. He was formerly engaged on Public Works and carried on a billiard saloon in Revell Street some years ago. He was a native of Tasmania, and 54 years of age, and leaves a widow and daughter in Australia. Deceased saw service in.the last war with the forces of Australia, of which country he was a native, and he received war injuries which always affected his healtn afterwards. He was a keen follower of the turf, and was formerly an owner. The funeral took place this morning.

At the Borough Council meeting ■last evening, Cr. Fox protested at the low altitude that planes passed over the town. At times they caused considerable alarm and consternation to residents. He moved that the attention of Air Travel, Ltd., be drawn to the practice, and that they be asked to take immediate steps to remedy the complaint.—Seconded by the Mayor and carried. The Gael sailed yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock for Jackson Bay with a good number of public work's employees aboard, who are returning to their jobs after holiday leave. Gillespie’s Beach dredge return this week was 36 ozs. 6 dwts., and Rimu Flat dredge return 149 ozs. 17 dwts. At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council, there were present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. W. H. Stopforth C. Caliari, D. ■P. Stuart, J. Fox, G. Heinz and A. R. Elcock. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. T. Parry, J. L. Turner, and F. D. E. Freitas. The Council approved of the appointment of Mr. T. Haddock, from 1 February as pound-keeper and ranger. It was decided to obtain estimates for repairing and painting the Town Hall.

The Health Inspector reported 48 visits during the month, and four samples taken. He also reported en requirements at local halls and theatres.

A special meeting to consider tenders for leasing of reserves, was called for January 25.

Receipts £231 14s 2d, expenditure £1,029 12s sd. Accounts amounting to £536 3s 9d were passed for pavment.

The Council authorised the transfer of the Reserves’ Endowment Fund Account to the Hokitika Savings Bank. Paterson, Mitchel and Co., Ltd. advised that extra water supply at their premises has not been used since' August 31, 3939, asking that the extra supply be cancelled from that date.—Approved. Mr. J. A. Roberts was granted a domestic, water connection to Section 3293 Spencer Street.

The Emergency Purposes’ Committee advised that an executive committee consisting of the chairman of the Westland County Council, the Mayors of Hokitika, Kuroara an.d .Ross, .and .the Member for Westland, has been set un to deal with general matters and -it was resolved to levy £4O for administration purposes, the quota from the Hokitika

Borough Council being £ll 15s.—The levy was approved. Westland Dairy Coy., Weld St., and Mr. D. M. Oldham, Park Street, were given permission to install septic tanks, the former’s being a second one. 1 Mr. R. S. Huxford advised he had built a new house in north Revell Street, west side, north of Tudor Street, and asked at what distance from the electric light poles his front fence is to be, also asking assistance to shift a large pile of sand on the roadway in front of his house. —The Chief Draughtsman’s offer regarding planning and surveying of West North Revell Street be accepted.— Applicants’ request was deferred meantime. The Beautifying Association asked for provising of material to improve a section next Mr. Howat’s butchery, Weld Street. Mr. Lionel Graham, submitted an offer for tar-sealing footpaths.—Each case to be submitted to the Council. Last month the abattoir dealt with 26 cows, 35 bullocks, 36 heifers, 378 sheep 283 lambs, 12. pigs, and 6 calves, one sheep being condemned. Fees were £BB 17s 6d, or 12s 6d less than for the same month of 1938. Seven sheep were delivered here by the N.Z. Refrigerating Company. Cass Square has been allocated for several gatherings in the ensuing few weeks. On February 3, Brunner picnic is being held there; oa February 11 Blackball picnic; and on February’l7 or 24, Paroa picnic. Mr. L. Dunn has obtained use of the Square on January 20 and February 10 for side sfiows.
