RECREATION WEEK

SUCCESS IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES. I In a statement reviewing the recent Tiecreation Week activities held throughout the country, the Hon. W. F. 'Parry, Minister of Internal Alfair's, states that desp.te the fact that the crisis arose and the war broke out at the time fixed for Recreation Week, many of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Committees throughout thd country carried on with their arrangements. ‘ That their wisdom in doing so was justified was shown by the success achieved. Quite apart from the fact that, much-needed funds were acquired by the organisations concerned, the holding of the Week brought new needs in iecreation to the notice oi people in many districts. For instance, an Akaroa newspaper, commenting on the lessor of Recreation Week, states that ‘There are many in the town and district wilting to take part in activitks, especially the evening recreations, and there is certainly a lack cf organisations to provide our peor>'e with some evening recreation.' As an outcome there is a movement on i\. ;t to form an Evening Recreation Club in this district. ‘ft is interesting to note the wide range of activities comprised in the functions held all over the country during the Week. In addition to tne standard winter recreative activities such as sports, drama, and music, several areas organised very successful hobby shows. In rhe case ot Masterton, a note of realism was introduced in the form cf a display of a fully-equipped Lewis gun section in fighting formation. Several novel games were introduced in some a-xas, as. for instance, dodgeball m i'l/ercargiil. The width of interests represented by the activities of rhe Week is indicated by the rang? of events which included badminton, miniature rille shoot.ng. skating dancing, bands and orchestras, baseball, basketbail, weight lifting, gymnastics, ahtletics, boxing wrestling, dancing in a variety of forms, fencing, drama, debating, table tennis, hockey, Rugby, Soccer, golf, hobble*deluding philately, photography and handwork of various types, and health md beautv displays.”
