AUSTRALIAN TRADE

With U.S.A. RATIONING OF IMPORTS [Aust. & N.Z. Cable /osji.l (Received November 7, 8.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, November 7. The Information Department announced that for Australian purchases in the United States sterling resources are likely to be rationed. Now that the embargo repeal measure enables American ships to trade to Australia, there is likely to be a bigger demand for imports, and this need for regulation so that war supplies shall obtain precedence. It is understood that there are dollar credits available equivalent to £5,000,000 in Australian currency. There is .expected to be a classification of imports to Australia from the United States, excluding non-essentials, especially if there is a likelihood of imports otherwise including too large a proportion of goods not essential for war needs.
