STOCKTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. Mr. and Mrs. J. Jose, visited Westport on Saturday. Stockton and Millerton Thistles met on Sunday at Ngakawau. The weather was extremely unsuitable, due to continuous rain. The game resulted in a draw, two goals being scored by each team. Mr. R. Robinson was the referee. The Stockton schoolboys succeeded in winning the McAx’thux’ Cup. Had the Denniston boys managed to beat Millerton in the game played on Sunday Stockton and Denniston would have met to finalise the Cup winners. Millerton beat Denniston, and Stockton, having the greater number of points, was successful in the first season of obtaining the McArthur Cup. The Stockton Schoool re-opened on Monday, after the usual term holidays had expired. Mr. and Mrs. Chester, of Seddonville, visited Mr. and Mrs. J. Bennett during the week-end.
A social and dance was held in the Hector Hall on Friday evening to commemorate the departure of Mr. and Mrs. A. Swan, who are leaving Ngakawau to take up residence in Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Swan have resided in Ngakawau for many years, and the esteem in which they were held was most evident by the large number present at the function. Mr. A. Bradley, has been off work with a poisoned arm, but is making good progress towards recovery. Mrs. H. Bettley, Snr., was a visitor to Westport on Saturday. Mrs. M. Daque, is a patient in the Westport Hospital, and has somewhat improved during the past week.
Messrs Connew and Evans, were visitors to Westport on Saturday to attend a meeting of the Buller Miners’ Central Committee. Several of the Stockton ex-service men have enrolled for service. The mine continues to work the full ten shifts per fortnight. The Spanish Medical Aid Committee held the weekly whist drive on Tuesday evening in the Library. The successful competitors were Mrs. F. Connew (Ist.) and Mr. C. Steele | (2nd.). I Misses Helen Steele and Frances i Potter, returned from Blackball on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Neilson, of Greymouth, spent the week-end with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Butterworth. Mrs. O. Hara, of Westport, who had been spending a holiday with her parents,; Mr. and Mrs. T. Carroll, left on Monday and entered the Buller Hospital for treatment. Mr. O. Hara has been in poor health for some time and her many ’friends wish her a speedy recovery to good health. Messrs J. Fitzsimmons, A. Bradley and Miss B. Bennett, visited Ngakawau on Monday for examination by Dr. Will, of Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess, of Christchurch, are spending their holidays with Mr. J. Chippendale and Mr. and Mrs. J’oe Morgan. Miss Maureen Fox, has returned after receiving treatment in the Westport hospital. Miss Thelma Rees, underwent an operation last week and Is making satisfactory progress.
