REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, September 6. The death took place at Reefton Hospital yesterday afternoon of Mr. Arthur Ernest McKenna, after a long illness, extending over many years, during the last five of which he has been a patient in Reefton Hospital. The deceased was born in Australia, and had been in New Zealand since a young man. He was predeceased by his wife some years ago, and leaves one son, Arthur, employed in the Post and Telegraph Office, .Reefton. He has many friends in Reefton, who will learn of his death with much regret. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Keily, of Westport, is on a visit to Reefton and is the guest of Miss Hughes, Lower Broadway. The funeral of the late Mr. William Ellery, of Waiuta, took place on Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a very large number, residents of BlacK’s Point, where the deceased spent his boyhood, being present in large numbers. The service at WesJey Church was conducted by the Rev. L. T. Norwell, who also read the service at the graveside in the Suburban Cemetery, the pall-bearers being employees of the Blackwater Mine. Among those present were a large number of members of the Loyal Reefton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., and the Reefton Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. After a very cold night on Monday, snow fell on the hills surrounding Reefton. The fall, however, was yery light, and it soon disappeared. A largely attended kitchen evening was tendered Mr. J. Eager and Miss T, Pearce at the residence of Mr. W. Simms, Junr., on Saturday evening, jwhen a very enjoyable time was spent in games, song and music. Numerous presents were made to the affianced couple, and the best wishes for jtheir future welfare and happiness were expressed by all. A| a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, before Messrs W. B. Auld and ,C- Nevin, Justices, a claim by the Public Trustee against Michael Fitzgerald for £6/9/2 was struck out neither party appearing when the’case was called. A Warden’s Court sitting fixed to be held at Reef ton on Tuesday was adjourned till the 19th instant. The Motueka Licensing Committee

met at the Court House on Tuesday, there being present Messrs S. Austin, J. Noble, D. Panckhurst, J. W. Riley and A. Rowling. In the absence of the Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr. Austin was elected to act as chairman. Applications were disposed of as follows:—Big River Hotel, E. W. V. Owing to the increased popularity of the Ree'fton Public.Librarv it has been decided to place another two hundred books on the shelves, and, in future, the supply obtained from the Country Library Service will he doubled.
