WANGANUI J.C. Lowenberg is Likely The Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting to-day has attracted good fields, and there should be interesting rafting. The meeting concludes on Saturday. The single pool system of betting will operate. ' Lowenberg’s Riccarton form should act' as a good guide for his engagement in the Marangi Handicap. Racing Notes In Retrospect: At all racing club meetings during the past week there has been strong protest against the removal of the 1 per cent, rebate on the totalisator tax. It remains for some club to recognise the help the Government has given them all during the last four years. Allez: The three-year-old filly Allez (by Defoe—lnvite) has been purchased by Mr W. J. Smith, of St. Aubin’s Stud, New South Wales. Mr Smith /has also bought Golden Chant (by Arausio— Conchita) and the pair have been shipped to Sydney. The negotiations were conducted by Mr M. Grogan, of Westmere. Golden Chant will be mated with Beau Pere and Ollez will be covered by Hua. Allez was bred and owned by Mr L. G. Paul. As a two-year-old she showed a remarkable turn of speed on the tracks early last season, but had no mouth and was almost uncontrolable, so was retired after a couple of races, in which she would not face the barrier. Gay Roce Retired: Gay Rose has finished her racing career and was sent to Rotorua this week on a visit to Chatsworth. Gay Rose won £4650 in stakes. In Regular Work: The aged gelding Gay Broney has commenced regular work at Ellerslie under the supervision of her owner, Mr J. D. Kemp. Although carrying a lot of surplus condition, Gay Broney is as lively as ever, but it will be some time before he is ready to race.

Names Registered: The two-year-old colt by Vaals from Judy Kelly will race as Slang Drift. This youngster is related to that good performer Kelly. A filly by Vaals from Mauriaena has had the name Akanora bestowed on her, and Tinketoon has been claimed for the yearling filly by Musketoon from Tin Lap.

Easy Race for Chat: Chat won the Hack Hurdles at New Plymouth in a common canter and, even though her task was made much easier when Gaine’s Choice ran off five furlongs from home, it is problematical whether she would have been beaten in any case. The little Siegfried mare is very well just now and more should be heard of her at the spring meetings.

Windsor Chief’s Success: Windsor Chief, who showed such good form at the Grand National meeting, scored a very popular’ victory in the Duke of Gloucester Cup for his owner, trainer and breeder, the Inglewood sportsman, Mr Lou Butler, whose son, Rex, was having his first ride in a race. Windsor Chief was well back early, but he ran into a handy position behind the seven bunched leaders, Very Glad, Golden Ridge, El Meynell, Conveyer, Du Maurier and Cuisinier. He then shot out fast to collar the pacemaker in

the next furlong and lead into the straight, where he ran rather wide. However, young Butler " boxed his compass well and Windsor Chief went right away again to easily beat Du Maurier. The Urenui Handicap: ’’ Dainty Dell ' weighed in 2*lbs overweight and third place was awarded to May Song, in the Urenui Handicap at the Taranaki Hunt mooting on Saturday. The hot favourite, Maxam, closed up like : a book and was last to finish. Theplacings were:'4/4 Shining’Hours, 1;2/3 Noble Fox, 2; 3/2 : 3. Won by half' a length; 2i lengths. Trotting Notes Tinker: A considerable amount of money was invested on Tinker, from M. Stewart’s stable to win the Massey Memorial Handicap at the Auckland T. C. meeting, but the Truman Direct gelding was all at sea in the heavy track and gave his trainer a most unpleasant drive. It was obvious as he passed the stand, with a round to go, that Tinker was in trouble and therefore, it was not surprising to see him drop further back as the race proceeded. Tinker should make amends when he gets the right foundation for his undoubted pace. One to Remember: F. J. Smith must have been a very happy man when he landed the American stallion Josedale Grattan first past the post in the Grey Lynn Handicap. His good opinion of this stylish pacer is justified, and it must have surprised him when Tsana flashed up in the last few yards and only failed by a head to wrest the lead from his horse. Tsana, a six-year-old gelding, by Jack Potts from Abyssinia,, is trained at Frankton by M. Stewart for Mr W. Hosking and he has all the makings of a high-class performer. Like many others of Jack Potts’ progeny, he has taken time to come good,’ but now is improving every day and he should win several races this season. Outclassed: There was an air of confidence, about the manner in which some big speculators backed Double Peter to beat Josedale Grattan and Tsana in the Grey Lynn Handicap. Some ■of them wouldn’t hear of his defeat. Well, he had every chance, as Broughton got him away well and did not take him to the lead until a mile had bene covered. At that stage Double Peter’s supporters were on great terms with themselves, but the horse was beaten at the'turn for home and could only finish /fourth. He is not in the class of Tsana and Josedale Grattan.

Two Promising Novices: Both Exporter (third) and Neon Oro (unplaced), in the first division of I l ' Mount Eden Handicap, should be capable of entering the winning list before the season is far advanced. Exporter battled on in fine style to get third place, while Neon Oro, who found the track conditions against her, showed a nice turn of speed in patches RACING FIXTURES. September 7. 9—Wanganui J.C.
