NAZI PAGANISM

MUST BE DESTROYED Mr Savage’s Broadcast [Special to “Argus.”] WELLINGTON, September fc. Making his first public speech since his recent serious illness, the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) broadcast to the nation and overseas from his residence, Northland, tonight, Mr Savage spoke with unusual vigour for more than 10 minutes, ana h’s speech indicated how complete has been his recovery to health. “In this critical hour of our own and the world's history” said Mr Savage. "I feel that I should abuse the privilige extended to me if I used th's occasion to refer to events of recent weeks concerning mvself. But those events have taught me how quickly the kinnness of the people of this country can be shown, and how political feeling;: can be subdued. I want to say ‘Thank you, friends, for your kindness you have shown to me’. To mv colleagues who, in my absence have performed my tasks as well as their own, I want to ex'press my sense of gratitude and to say that I concur wholeheartedly in every step they have taken for the protection of New Zealand.” “The war on which we are engaging mav be a long one” contained the Prime Minister. "It will demand heavy and continuous sacrifice, and it is essential that we should realise from the beginning, that our cause is worth the effort. I feel, and I sincerely !,eFeve that it is so. None of us has anv hatred for the German people For the songs, art and folk lore of Prussia, we have nothing but admiration. We know, alas, that such things in life have been despised and rejected bv the men who have seized power and retained it in Germany. We know that thev have done incalculable harm to their own country, and i--ve destroyed the intellectual, art stic and moral resources which the people o f Germany have built up in the course of centuries. In doing this, they have cowed the spirit of the people of a great nation.” AFTER POLAND . . . ? “If these men succeed in Poland, their next attempt will be to overthrow Britain and France,” declared Mr Savage with emphasis. “Let us make no mistake about that! They have refused every suggestion of peace, and, with the rest of the world, we know now that their word has proved worthless, to be broken as soon as the opportunity offers. Not a moment too soon have Britain and France taken up arms against so unscrupulous and adversary. We will fight with a determination that springs from a dislike of those who show a contemnt of human nature — of a doctrine that decides what people. without their consent, shall and J shall not do. Never have the present rulers of Germany treated the people as free men—as individual and responsible souls. The indivdual man is forgotten and freedom of art and expression is denied them. Dissent or criticism is invariably ruthlessly suppressed.” MILITANT PAGANISM! “Nazism,” said Mr Savage, “is militant and unsatiable paganism! In its short but terrible history, it has caused incalculable suffering, spreading misery throughout the world. Either it or civilisation must be destroyed: Britain and France have taken up arms to assist Poland in her struggle against an aggressor. May God prosper those arms!” "I am satislied that the purposes of this war will be clearly understood bv the people of New Zealand, where, for over a century, we have enjoyed freedom under British rule. We have ranged ourselves beside Britain, Where she goes we go too, and where she stands so do we. We will move forward in a union of hearts and ideals to a common destiny.” The Prime Minister’s voice retained its vigour throughout the address, and the concluding portions were delivered with far greater emphasis than has been riven the addresses broadcast over the Empire stations by the leader? of the other nations in the British Commonwealth of Nations.
