The death has occurred at Christchurch in his sixty-fifth year, of Mr John McNair, an extremely popular and capable railway engineer, who retired from the position of District Engineer at Christchurch in Mav 1938.

To celebrate the coming of age of Miss Doreen Thomson, of Gore, who is visiting Greymouth, Mrs. L. Williams was hostess at a pleasant evening held at the residence of Mrs. J. Jackson. Over 30 guests were present, and the evening was spent in games, competitions and items. Mr. O. Jackson expressed the good wishes of those present to Miss Thomson and Mr. J. H. Williams replied on her behalf. Miss Thomson was the recipient of a large number of beautiful gifts.

An Auckland Press Association telegram states: A career of nearly 40 years as a Mission Priest among the Maoris of the Auckland Province was closed to-day, by the sudden death of the Very Rev Dean A. Lightheart, who was formerly the Superior in New Zealand, of the Mill Hill Fathers. Dean Llghtlieart, who was ir>„ his 78th year, was latterly a Chaplain of the Marist Brothers Juniorate at Tuakau. He went into the chapel vf the institution early this afternoon to pray, and he was found dead there. He was a native of Holland.
