NEW PLYMOUTH, March 11. An appreciable fall of rain in many parts of Taranaki since yesterday has broken the long, dry spell that had caused a considerable drop in dairy production, and, particularly in coastal areas, placed many farmers in a serious position. The heaviest falls have been experienced round the coast, filling tanks which had been dry for many days. At Opunake this , morning, many hitherto bone-dry tanks were overflowing. In inland districts, only light falls have been recorded, doing little to relieve the serious dryness. In the Eastern Stratford districts, where rain is badly wanted, The fall has been negligible. Conditions in the back country generally are becoming serious. South Taranaki is still fairly parched after light rain overnight. ; DUNEDIN, March 12. | At the Farmers’ Union meeting at Balclutha on Saturday, the following resolution, moved by the Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., was carried: “That the New Zealand Farmers’ Union approves of the defence conference between representatives of Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, and strongly urges that New Zealand should take her full share in Empire defence by the provision of adequate sea, land, and air forces.”
