[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, December 9. The Postmaster (Mr R. Cox) advised'that from the 16th inst., the name of the Waiho Gorge Post and Telegraph Office will be changed to Franz Josef Glacier. Allocations of £lOO each have been made to the Hokitika and Ross Red Cross Societies from funds gained from art unions in the Dominion. The grants, which were announced yesterday by the Hon. W. E. Parry (Minister for Internal Affairs) are portion of a sum of £12,000 from art union funds which is being allocated by the Government as a Christmas gift to a number of philanthropic and kindred institutions in New Zealand. The money which forms the grants comes from* the accumulated surplus profits of the £5OOO alluvial gold art unions conducted during the year. Guests at Hotel Westland include: Mr'J. Rogers, Mrs A. C. Miss Mary Warren, who sat for. the senior entrance examination in the same subjects, was also successful. For the senior Government, 110 words per minute are required for shorthand, and 40 per minute for typing. For the junior, the speed is 80 words per. minute in shorthand, and 30 in typewriting. Webb (Minister of Mines) on behalf of the Minister of Railways (Hon. D. G Sullivan) by a deputation consisting of the Mayor (Mr G. Perry) and the chairman of the Automobile Associa- , tion (Mr G. Chapman), during the Minister’s visit to-day, Mr J. O’Brien M.P. introduced the deputation

requested that suitable attention should be given to the question of visibility at the railway crossings in Park and Tudor Streets. It was suggested that two overhead bridges would be suitable, as the decline in the street would make construction comparatively simple. The shunting of trains across Weld Street was referred to, and the deputation requested that this should be done at the northern end of the station yards, as was intended when Stafford Street was closed. Mr Chapman in addition, drew attention to the state of the Weld Street crossing, and Mr G. H. Mackley (General Manager of Railways), who was with Mr Webb, promised to have the matter attended to, if the Borough Council would allow the use of its men. The bad condition of the corner at Kanieri, leading to the new dredge, was referred to. Mr Chapman asked that consideration be given to the placing of at least four crossings on the Hokitika railway bridge, on which two large cars were unable to pass. There was a great increase in traffic over the bridge since the aerodrome opened, and this would further* increase when the new road to South Westland was completed. Mr/Webb said that the matter would be represented to the Minister of Public Work s for investigation into the responsibilities of the department and local bodies. Mr Mackley said that he understood a £ for £ subsidy was available fpr the work. ; Mr Webb assured the deputation that Mr. Semple would co-operate with Mr Sullivan in doing his best to end an unsatisfactory state of affairs.
