Blomfield v. Jonathan OPEN AIR BOUT. • AUCKLAND, December 4. The professional wrestlers, Lofty Blomfield, of Auckland, and Brother Jonathan, of America, drew a crowd of 10,000’ people to Carlaw Park on Saturday night, when they met in an open air contest. Blomfield won by two falls to one. The first fall was a penalty one, to Blomfield, in the fourth round, when his opponent persisted in the use of his knee, after being repeatedly warned for such an offence. Jonathan remonstrated with the referee, and gave full vent to his feelings. When the gong sounded for the opening of the fifth round, he attacked the New Zealander viciously, holding him by the hair of his head with his left hand, while he delivered heavy blows to the jaw with his right. Blomfield was felled, and was then lifted bodily for a slam, to be an easy victim for a body press. The deciding fall came in the seventh round, when Blomfield applied his octopus clamp. Jonathan resisted the hold for about three minutes. Finally he submitted. He had to be assisted to his corner, and later limped from the ring, supported by his two seconds. The contest was lively throughout, the referee, Mr J. McLean, being kept very alert in checking illegalities on the. part of both men, Jonathan for using his knee and for hitting with his clenched fist, and Blomfield for pulling the visitor’s whiskers and .ears.
