CYCLING NOTES

[By “Spoke.”] excellent weather for their Gymkhana The Greymouth Physical Fitness Centre were fortunate to have such last Saturday, when the track was in first class order. The senior riders raced only in one event for the day, as in the Three Mile Championship the time was slow and the way they rode was a disgrace to riders of their experience, and as they are expected to set an example of sportsmanship for the junior riders cycle racing will soon be a thing of the past in Greymouth unless the Greymouth Cycling Club officials act more severely in the future. D. A. Morland, who holds the South Island One Mile Championship, showed great judgment to win the West Coast Derby Championship last Saturday.

P. Duffy gave every indication that he was not properly fit, but as he secured second place in both of the senior events, when at the top of his form he should be able to hold his own against any of the leading riders in New Zealand. J. Archer rode one of the best races ih his cycling career in the Three Mile Championsffip as he rode, leading the field practically two miles out of the three, and if he could only improve his sprint, he should no doubt be a scratch man in the near future. H. Dalcom tailed the field in both of the senior events, but as he has neither the racing cycle or equipment, he rides a game race, and when he has the proper gear he should soon work his way to the back marks. A. Merhtens once aghin rode an excellent race in the junior half mile, but he started his sprint too soon, and faded out before the finishing post had been reached, and with a little more experience more should be heard of this newcomer to Jhe cycling sport as he has the makings of a back marker.

R. Pascoe, who is meeting with a large measure of success on the track, rode a first class race, and did not look like being beaten at any stage of the junior half mile. D. Grenfell, who secured third place in the half mile, is a rider who would meet with more success if he took the sport more seriously, and trained harder, as he shows every indication of becoming a first class rider.

J. Lamont was one of the favourites to win the Junior Championship, and he did not let his supporters down, as he gained 11 points out of the possible 15, and he should be able to hold his own with the New Zealand junior champions as he has the speed, and shows great judgment in the sprints. J. Cooper is one of the best versatile riders on the West Coast at the present, time, as he has secured first place in the 25 mile road race to Hokitika held last season, and he was runner up for the Junior Championship held last Saturday, and he is one of the keenest members of the Greymouth Cycling Club as he journeys from Camerons every Wednesday evening to participate in the races. A meeting of the. Greymouth Cycling Club will be held next Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m. sharp, when all members are requested to attend.

A training ride will be held at Victoria Park next Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, when all riders who are competing in track events should be present. C. Williams, who was elected as referee for the Greymouth Cycling Club, met with success in both road and track events a few seasons ago, and his experience of cycle racing should prove an asset to the Club.
