OPENS AT TOWN HALL Crowded Attendance The monster . Carnival Bazaar as a finale to the Marist Brothers' Queen Carnival, ' was officially opened last evening by His Worshipthe. Mayor (Mr F A. Kitchingham). There was an exceptionally crowded attendance and the various stallholders and sideshows did a good business. On the stage with the Mayor were Very Rev. Father J. Long, Rev. Brother Oswald (Director of the Marist Brothers’ School), Mr J. O’Brien M.P., and Mr A. M. Carroll (chairman of Carnival committees). Prior to the opening speeches- Rev. Father Long briefly addressed the assemblage, stating that a telephone message had been sent by Bishop Brodie from Christchurch, .conveying his best wishes for the success of the carnival and for a full realisation of the hopes of all. (Applause). Father Long eulogised the work of the Marist Brothers and added That it gave him much pleasure to see on the platform His Worship the Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, and the Member for the District, Mr James O’Brien. Mr Carroll said that he did not wish to detain the audience very long. They had reached the last lap of the carnival race and wished all workers -1 very best results. He had very much pleasure in welcoming Mr Kitchingham and Mr O’Brien, both gentlemen being present at considerable, Inconvenience, the Mayor hdving had to leave the Borough Council meeting, and Mr O’Brien just having returned from a tour of the southern part of his electorate. . ......

. The Mayor said that it gave him very great pleasure to take part in the opening of the bazaar. He complimented the various stallholders on the brightness of the stalls, and hoped that they would all have very successful results. ' His said that it had also given, him great pleasure to be present bn the day of the laying of the foundation stone of the Brothers’ home, and to hear His Lordship the Bishop speak. He had great admiration for the work of the Marist Brothers, not only in their secular teaching, but also in the training they gave in morals and religion. Father Long had spoken of good citizenship and he said that what were wanted to-day were good citizens, who would be able to bear the worries and burdens of -civic life. It gave him much pleasure to declare the bazaar open, and he extended best wishes to all for a successful conclusion. •

Mr O’Brien said that he wished to make his remarks as brief as possible as he knew that they had all come there that evening to do business, and wanted to be “on the go.’’ He highly commended the excellent object of the bazaar and carnival in providing the Marist Brothers with a good home. He eulogised the excellent work of the Brothers in the district, and congratulated the various comrhit;tees on their display of work. To all the Queens he wished success in the pursuit of the honours to which • they aspired. He felt sure that the efforts of all the workers would meet with the success they deserved, and that the hopes of all would be realised with the Brothers’ home being opened free of debt. ‘ v..

During the evening items were given by the Marist Brothers’ Boys’ Choir and the Dorothy Thwaites’ School of Dancing. The bazaar will be continued today and to-night, whert there will be many attractions. . The various stalls are loaded with really valuable goods of all descriptions, and the crowded attendance found much to satisfy their needs last evening. The stallholders and their assistants are:—-
