The West Coast Farmers’ Union will tender a reception to Mr and Mrs C. S. Neville, at Herb Moore’s on Wednesday evening next, at 8 o’clock. Mr Neville retired this week after many years’ service as Stock Inspector at Greymouth. The' Mayy (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), will preside, and all farmers and friends of Mr and Mrs Neville are invited by advertisement to be present.

When a circular regarding the forthcoming Road Safety Week was before the Grey County Council, last evening, Cr. J. Mulcare said that motor vehicles owned by the Public Wo.”ks Department, and working on the State Highways, habitually averaged 50 to 60 miles per hour, on the roads, and even crossing small bridges. “It is nothing short of a scandal,” said Cr. Mulcare. “If they want to do anything they ought to start on themselves.” The acting-chairman (Cr. J. Ryall), remarked that there was no doubt the lorries did a lot of speeding.

The non-observance of signs at both ends of Grogan’s Lane by motorists,, was referred to by Cr. R. J. Williams at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council. There was a notice there, he said, asking cars to go slow, but they dashed through the lane at speeds up to 20 and 25 miles per hour. Cr. G. R. Harker said that he had never yet seen cars come out of either end at a speed greater than six miles per hour. Cr. Williams said that he could not agree with that, and moved that the attention of the Traffic Inspector be drawn to the practice of speeding through the lane. I

At a meeting of seventeen Greymouth business men yesterday mory.-j ing, which was convened by Mr P. Beck, for the purpose of discussing Christmas and New Year, holidays it was decided that the late night, be observed on Friday, December 23, and that Saturday, Christmas Eve be 01?-, served as a half-holiday, the shops closing at midday. An amendment, that the late night be observed on I Christmas Eve, and that the half-1 holiday be observed 1 oh some other, day of that week, was defeated, on the voices. A similar arrangement will prevail for the New Year holidays. *

During the month of November, 12 building permits of a total value of £5,134, were issued by the Greymouth Borough Council. At last evening’s meeting of the Grey County Council, two tenders were received for the erection of the Homestead Creek bridge, these being Wst Coast United Contractors Ltd., £427 15s, and William Arnott £369. Mr Arnott’s tender was recommended for acceptance. No tenders were received for the Brown Grey, and Evan’s Creek bridges. It was decided to recommend the tender of West Coast United Contractors, Ltd., for Souter’s Creek bridge, at £1,249 16s. The matter of the bridges for which no tenders were received, was left to The Engineer (Mr J. Higgins), with power to act.

1 The transmitter of Station' 3ZR Greymouth, which for some time past has been located on the ground floor in Central Chambers, Mackay Street, is to be moved during the next‘few days to the second floor of the building, where it was formerly situated. The work is expected to take a week, and in the meantime a stand-by plant, of approximately the same .signal strength will be used. The Public Works Department is making the necessary alterations to the premises and the work of transferring the transmitter and studio from Their present locations is being commenced immediately, The new rooms in Central Chambers will include the transmitting control room, studio, station manager’s office and a record library, where‘all the records used will be filed.
