NOVEMBER RETURNS

CUSTOMS INCREASE

In Various Centres

There was an increased return under all headings at the Greymouth customs office last month, as - com* pared with the corresponding month of 1937. There was an increase of £1432 2s lid in the total'collections. The individual returns were:—- • '

A substantial increase in the total revenue collected at the Dunedin Customs Office during the month ed to-day Is disclosed when a comparison is made with the figures for November of last year. This year the total for the month was £148,234, which is an increase of £8,208 over amount collected during November 1937. Following are the figures for November, together with those for the corresponding month of last year (shillings and pence ommitted):— 1938 1937

There were two marriages at the Registry Office. DUNEDIN, November 30.

Although the figures for deaths and marriages for the month of November remained about the same as for same period of last year, there wa s a marked decrease in the, number of births here, the number being 35 lower than that for November 1937. Following

Customs figures for Christchurch this year have, in general, fallen below exceptionally high figures of the two’ previous years. The customs returns for the last month, however, have exceeded those for November of 1937 by £7948. For the eight months of the present financial year, the revenue collected at Christchurch totalled £1,406,128, or £55,891 less than in the same period of 1937. .The revenue from the sales tax has been fairly well maintained. The November total is £612 . higher than the November total of last year. Over the eight-monthly period, however, this year’s sales tax revenue was £19,375 less than. last year’s. The petrol tax and beer duty show a consistent upward trend for the eighlf-monthly period, being £14,236 and £6939 respectively in excess of last year’s returns.

PORT OF GREYMOUTH. Owing to bad weather during the past month, fewer vessels than usual entered the port of Greymouth. The figures are as follows:—-
