HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] HOKITIKA, October 26. The Borough Council last evening decided to call applications for a person to act as pound-keeper, and to deal with wandering stock. It was decided that traffic inspection be left to an officer of the Transport Department, and it was reported that when Mr W. Gaylor retires as Inspector of Nuisances, this work is to be carried out by the Sanitary Inspector, Mr J. G. Kirk. Miss Ada Lynn gave a very enjoyable song recital at the Regent (Theatre last evening, Mrs H. Thompson acting as accompaniste. The new de Haviliand Dragon Fly twin-engined aeroplane, purchased by Air Travel (N.Z.) Ltd., for use in its mail and passenger service, is arriving by the Rangitiki to-morrow at Wellington. The machine is similar to the one purchased by the Company earlier this year, which is being used in the South Westland service, passengers by which to-day were:—Mr T. Cameron'and Miss M. Rowe (Hokitika to Waiho), Miss M. Graham (Waiho to Hokitika), and Miss H. M. Williams and Miss G. M. Pugh (Greymouth-Waiho). Misses I Williams and Pugh were passengers I from Wellington to, Greymouth by 'the Cook Strait Airways West Coast [’plane service. Cricket matches here at the weekend will be:—Saturday—Seaview v. Hokitika, at Seaview; School v. Woodstock, at Woodstock. SundayWoodstock v. Kanieri, at Kanieri; ,Ross v. Ruatapu, at Ross; Hokitika v. Rimu, at Seaview. Kanieri Gold Dredging, Ltd., is expected to begih working at the end of next month. The directors’ report that owing to rising prices, the capital of the company was insufficient to see the dredge to the production stage. Arrangements were made to secure funds considered necessary, amounting to £30,000. Arahura Gold Dredging Ltd., another Australian company, shows expenditure on the bucket dredge of £80,844 in the accounts as at March 31. The property is shown at £50,861. Debtors owe £8,876, and cash is £5OO. Preliminary and developmental expenditure is stated at £7,886. The capital is £155,000. The directors state that it is expected that the dredge will start work early in 1939. The capital proved insufficient to see the dredge to the producing stage, and arrangements were made to secure about £30,000, which was considered necessary to reach production. The board is satisfied that the dredge will prove an efficient and economical unit.

Rimu Flat dredge return is 293 ozs. and Gillespie’s Beach dredge return is 21 ozs. 10 dwts. The Borough Council last evening passed a motion, expressing sympathy with Mr H. L. Michel in his illness and hopes for his speedy recovery. At the Abattoir last month, the following animals were slaughtered:— 24 cows, 41 heifers, 52 bullocks, 239 sheep, 11 pigs, 1 calf. Condemned 2 cows, 3 sheep. Fees £62 8s 6d (same month last year £6l Is). Last month the New Zealand Refrigerating Coy. delivered here 190 sheep and 17 pigs. St. Mary’s Debating Club held its annual wind-up social at’ the Club Rooms last evening, concluding a very successful season. Mr J. F. Lynch (President), was in the chair and the following visitors were present:—Mr R. R. Dawber (President of the West Coast Debating League), Mr W. J. Butler (Vice-President of St. Columba Debating Club, Greymouth), Mr S. Quintrell (President, and Messrs J. Denford and A. E. Bastings (United Debating Club, Greymouth). During the evening, Rev. Dr. Harrison presented the prizes won during the year for impromptu speeches, elocutionary competition and cup for religious questions. The following toast list was duly honoured:—The King; St. Mary’s Club; West Coast Debating League; Old Members; Junior Members; Kindred Clubs; The Judges; The Visitors; The President and Secretary and The Ladies. Mr Les Boyer was the accompanist and items were given during the evening by Messrs J. F. Lynch, J. D. StUart, M. Davidson andA. Heveldt. On the eve of her approaching marriage, Miss N. Yarrall was entertained at the Ladies’ Golf Club-house and presented with a silver-mounted tray by her friends, Mrs J. C. Macfariane (a former Club Captain), making the presentation.

At the Borough Council meeting last evening, there were present:— The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. J. ■ L. Turner, W. H. A. Stopforth, C. Caliari and A. R. Elcock. It was decided that, regarding a complaint by J. D. Bayne and other residents on the unsatisfactory state of the open drains on the west side of Davie Street, for a. few chains south of Hampden Street, hs the cost of piping to Stafford Street would be £53, without f labour, and as only two houses were affected, they should be required to provide drainage shafts and grease traps. It was decided to charge £52 per year for collecting the Harbour Board rate, as before 1933, jwhen the chafge was reduced to £34. The matter of forming the footpath ' along the frontage of the Government houses on Whitcombe Square was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. The offer of Mr Hackell to supply timber for a new crossing over Livingstone Street drain was accepted. It' was resolved that ail parking of motor vehicles be prohibited on both sides of Revell Street, between the south side of Camp and the north side of Stafford Street. Mr James Gordon Kirk, sanitary inspector, was appointed Inspector of Nuisances. It was decided to grant the Housing Department permission to construct an open drain on the west side of Hoffman Street, between Stafford Street . and Weld Street. The Treasury reported district fund account receipts £3245 14s 7d, payments £1675 Is Id; credit balance £565 15s 2d, Water supply repayment account, credit balance £309 4s sd. Accounts amounting to £2127 14s 9d were passed for payment, S. G. Stephens, Revell Street, was granted permission to instal a septic tank; also to erect a suspended verandah. It was decided to grant £5 to the Progress League for an advertisement in "The Press.” Brunner Picnic Committee was granted use of Cass Square on February 19th next. It was decided to fix one day monthly for dumping rubbish behind the protection works between Brittan Street and the harbour signal station, also to

repair the road to the Signal Station, The repairing and gravelling of the frontage and path at E. W. Green’s property, Park Street, also work fronting L. P. ’K. Gooch’s property, Stafford Street, be referred to the Works Committee. A water service was granted O. Williams, North Revell Street, at an extra fee of £2 a year. Approval was given the following applications by E. T. Stoop:— Subdivision of reserve 584; attaching of two links to freehold sections; and | transfer of lot 10 of reserve 584 to A. D. Tregidga. A mortgage of reserve 505 by the lessee was approved. The Works Committee was empowered to act re. J. A. Roberts’ request for attention to the north belt drain through rubbish being deposited in it and causing the water to back on to applicant’s section, and for removal of stop bank, at south end of his section, No. 3263. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, advised re. Lots 13, 19 and 20, D.P. 737, part Reserve 492, Whitcombe Square, that in regard to payment for these sections, amounting to £240, as the land was held in trust for a specific purpose, the Government desired that the money be expended on the same trusts as those under which the land was held; also suggesting that the money might be spent for the purpose of improving the drainage or access to Whitcombe Square. Resolved that money be used for Square draining and roading. The Commissioner advised that the Housing Department is still desirous of acquiring further house sites in Hokitika, and asked whether the Council would be prepared to consider offers for lots 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36. part M.R. 492, Whitcombe Square, and if so, would it be possible to utilise ' the drain leading down Hall Street for draining these sections. Resolved that Council agree to sell the five sections for £6O each. It was decided to inform the Highways Council that in regard to borough stock, a ranger operating outside the borough this could not be arranged The trustees, Hokitika Savings Bank, applied for consent to plan of subdivision of Lots 1 and 2, of Sections 55, 69, 71 arid 100. This was agreed to. It was was decided to agree to the transfer to the Education Board of reserve 541, Sale Street. An application by M. A. Gaines to hire a street stand at Preston’s right-o-way during Xmas week was refused. It was decided to act for the Hokitika Tennis Club in employing on its property two men under Scheme 13 for one month. F. M. Singer’s application for part of the east town belt, adjoining Section 1338 was refused. The Fire Board was granted part of reserve 725.
