HOKITIKA, September 20.

After fourteen years’ service as Borough Inspector, Mr W. E. Gaylor has resigned. In accepting his resignation the Borough Council last evening decided to extend his term' of leave on full pay until January 31, tributes being paid -,to his efficient service by Crs. Elcock and Fox, and the Town Clerk, Mr Coles. Rimu Flat dredge return this week was 185ozs 18dwt from 51,468 yards, for 135 hours.

Okarito dredge return was 34ozs for 114 hours.

The Borough Council has decided to request the Railway Department to repair the railway bridge planking in the interests of motor traffic.

The hidden holes competition of the Ladies' Golf Club -was won by Miss B. Cooke, 31—10—21, her handicap being reduced to 7, and that- of Mrs Davenport to 6. At the Arahura live stock sale .yesterday 115 cattle were offered. Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. disposed of 62 head, including some exceptional quality heifers, one of which reached £l4 12s 6d, while a shorthorn bullock, 'on account of the same vendor, Mr T. A. The Hokitika Borough Council met' last evening. Present: The DeputyMayor, Cr. A, R, Elcock), Crs. G.{ Heinz, C. Callari, -F. D. E. Freitas, W. H. Stopforth, J. Pox. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. H. L. Michel and H. T. Parry. The financial statement showed receipts £2217 . 18s 2d, expenditure £1042 18s 2d. Accounts amounting to £1675 Is Id were passed for payment. In referring to the resignation of the Borough Inspector, Mr W. Gaylor, Mr Elcock eulogised his services while a servant of the Council during the past 13 years, other, members endorsing his remarks. —It was decided to accept the resignation with regret -and appreciation, and to grant him three months’ retiring leaVe. .It was resolved that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Heinz, Fox and Caliari; deal with the matter of his successor. It was decided to increase the salary of the Librarian to £3 5s per -week and to increase the subsidy to the Library accordingly, Cr. Heinz discussed the rubbish disposal and suggested the council appeal to the public through the press for more attention to its disposal. It was decid- 1 ed to procure a further ten chains of

4-inch pipes. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of August ■ amounted to 20 cows, 22 heifers, 87 bullocks, 3 calves, 268 sheep and 7 pigs. Condemned, one cow. for August amounted to £69 63, compared with £57 3s collected for corresponding month last year. Cr. Fox' moved, that thc ; attention of the authorities be drawn to the dangerous condition of some of the planking on the Hokitika River combined railway 'and traffic bridge.—Carried. N.Z. Refrigerating Coy. advised the following meat was delivered into Hokitika.—July, 1938, 104 sheep, August, 1938, 183 sheep, 7 pigs. W. J. Butler, Estate, Cass Square Fund, forwarded interest to the 15/6/38, £lB 13s. The Commissioner of Transport advised that Air Travel (N.Z:) Ltd., had applied for an amendment to their continuous aircraft-service license to provide a second aircraft to be used for the Hokitika-Inchbonnie-Weheka-Franz Josef-Haast-Okuru service and asking whether : Council has any representations to make.—No representations. The Centennial (Westland Committee) advised that next meeting of the General Committee will be held on October, 12, and the Mayorsof Hokitika and Greymouth will represent Westland at a meeting of delegates at Wellington on October 29. Miss Esther Ward wrote, asking that Borough Reserve on the north side of her property on Cemetery Hill be cleared of gorse, as there is a seri■ous danger of fire.—Referred to, Works Committee. Employment' Bureau, Greymouth wrote approving of work schedule submitted by Council under Scheme 13 and stating that subsidy on the following basis had been allocated: (a) A special committment of £413 for sewer work; (h) a special committment of £1320 for other jobs specified in the schedule, (a) Commissioner of Transport in regard to turn Touts and warning devices on the Hokitika Bridge; (b) district engineer, Public Works, Greymouth on the same matter; (c) clerk, Westland County Council, on the same, matter. —Deferred pending advice from Automobile Association. F. G. Reid, building contractor, was granted water supply to section boundaries of Government houses to be erected in Weld Street.—The Director of Housing Construction: (1) That in order to provide in Jollie Street for the Council’s 18-inch drain to connect with the drain which is to service the houses being erected by the Government that it will be necessary to increase the present 12-inch drain to 24-inch on account of the flatter gradient rind that if the larger drain is substituted for the 12-inch one that the Council should bear the extra cost including that of widening qndMeep-’ ening the main drain from Stafford Street to the.river; (2) In regard to water reticulation the Department proposes to instal at its own expense a 4-inch main down the new street complete with hydrants and services and asking for the Council’s quotation for carrying out this , work, on the Council’s standard construction. —Deferred and referred to the Town Clerk. A. W. Rotiinson was given permission to instal septic tank at his new dwelling in Hall Street... Mrs Eva Steel to instal septic tank at new dwelling in Hall' Street. Mr T. W. Barrowman wrote re, lease of Municipal Reserve No. 542 granted to him, stating that lease be granted to his son Campbell Ward Barrowman, of Hokitika, Mental, attendant, as from the date of the, original lease. —No objection. Returned Soldiers’ Association pointed out,, the unsatisfactory condition of the clay surface on the road entrance at the Cemetery, and stating that one of the members fell on the slippery surface, necessitating medical attention.-rßeferred to Reserves Committee for attention. N. Toomey drew attention to the flooding at her property in Fitzherbert Street, and suggesting that the drain on the east side of - e street be continued to Hampden Street to trap the flood water at that point.— Referred to Works Committee. Mrs M. Fitzgerald and others wrote, pointing out that the surface water at the corner of Fitzherbert and Tudor Streets is overflowing on to their property,—Referred to Works Committee. Mr W. Eggling and others wrote asking that the water course at Gibson Quay and Sale Street be piped.— Already approved, work to be done as soon as possible. Grey Motors Ltd. forwarded particulars of a V-8 Ford truck suitable for the Borough requirements.—Deferred till next meeting.
