MAORI CHOIR RETURN. [Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, May 12. I After fourteen months’ tour of the Australian States and the British Isles during which they were presented to, and sang before, the King and Queen, the Waiata Maori choir returned to Auckland this morning, from London, by tne Rotorua. Members spoke with enthusiasm of the success of the venture, the first they had undertaken, but gli spoke with unfeigned joy at seeing again their native land. The King expressed a wish that the choir would take back to New Zealand his love of his people, both pakeha and Maori. Similar sentiments were expressed by Lord Bledisloe and Mr Jordan. The choir left New Zealand in March 1937 and travelled from Australia, via Suez and spent seven months in Britain. BOY CYCLIST FALLS IN HARBOUR. CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. Garth McKenzie, aged 10 years, fell into the harbour at Lyttelton to-day. He was cycling’ on the wharf to which the steamer express is berthed when his bicycle skidded on the railway. Although he could not swim the boy had the presence of mind to grab the rope that was flung to him. He clung to the rope until he was picked up by a launch. Meanwhile his bicycle had been recovered undamaged. The boy’s home is at Hinds, near Ashburton, and he is staying at Lyttelton for the school holidays. He suffered no ill effects. ROYAL PORTRAITS. WELLINGTON, May 12. The Governor-General received the following announcement from the Lord Chamberlain, Buckingham Palace: “In commemoration of Their Majesties' Coronation, the King has been pleased to approve that copies of the State portrait of His Majesty and Her Majesty should be placed in Government house in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland, India, Southern Rhodesia, Burma, and Colonial Dependencies, and His Majesty’s Embassies and Legations abroad. As a large number of copies will be required for the complete scheme of distribution, some considerable time must necessarily elapse before His Majesty’s gracious intention can be carried into effect.”-.
